The Cardiothoracic Surgery Division at our organization is on the lookout for a board-certified or board-eligible Heart Transplant Surgeon to become part of our esteemed Heart & Vascular Center, known for its international acclaim.

The ideal candidate will play a vital role within a multidisciplinary team focused on providing care for patients facing advanced heart failure and end-stage cardiac conditions.

This position entails an appointment within the Department of Surgery, specifically in the Cardiothoracic Surgery Division, along with membership in our clinic.

Position Overview

The main emphasis of this role will be on clinical excellence, academic contributions, education, and innovation in the realms of heart transplantation, advanced heart failure surgery, and mechanical circulatory support.

Our expanding transplant program is witnessing notable growth in both clinical volume and complexity , offering an exciting opportunity for a distinguished surgeon to make significant contributions at one of the nation’s top academic transplant centers.

Clinical Responsibilities

• Engage in all facets of adult heart transplantation.

• Conduct heart transplantation and donor procurement procedures.

• Implement durable ventricular assist device (VAD) implantation and management.

• Participate in temporary mechanical circulatory support procedures, including ECMO and short-term assist devices.

• Assess and manage patients with advanced heart failure who require transplantation or mechanical circulatory support.

• Provide both inpatient and outpatient care for heart transplant recipients and patients utilizing mechanical circulatory devices.

• Share on-call responsibilities related to heart transplantation and mechanical circulatory support.

• Work closely with heart failure cardiologists, transplant coordinators, critical care specialists, anesthesiologists, perfusionists, infectious disease experts, and advanced practice providers.

• Contribute to quality improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing transplant outcomes.

• Engage in donor recovery activities as necessary.

Academic Responsibilities

• Educate and mentor residents, fellows, medical students, and other trainees in cardiothoracic surgery.

• Participate in clinical, outcomes, translational, and investigator-initiated research.

• Contribute to clinical trials focused on heart transplantation, advanced heart failure, ECMO, and mechanical circulatory support, as well as graft preservation systems.

• Present scholarly work at regional, national, and international conferences.

• Collaborate across our organization to foster innovation and research in transplantation and advanced heart failure.

Qualifications

Applicants must:

• Be board-certified or board-eligible in Thoracic Surgery by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery (ABTS).

• Be eligible for unrestricted medical licensure in Georgia.

• Have completed an accredited residency in cardiothoracic surgery.

• Have undergone advanced fellowship training in heart transplantation and mechanical circulatory support, or possess equivalent experience.

• Exhibit excellence in clinical judgment, technical skills, and patient-centered care.

• Demonstrate exceptional interpersonal and communication abilities, along with a commitment to teamwork across disciplines.

• Show an interest in academic surgery through research, education, and scholarly activities.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in adult heart transplantation.

• Knowledge of mechanical circulatory support (both temporary and durable).

• Familiarity with ECMO and extracorporeal life support.

• Expertise in advanced heart failure surgery.

• Experience in donor procurement.

• Involvement in clinical trials and translational research.

• Experience in educating residents and fellows.
