Description:


McDowell County Schools is seeking a passionate and dedicated Orientation and Mobility (OMVI) Therapist to provide on-site services to our students. The OMVI Therapist will be responsible for assessing, planning, and implementing orientation and mobility instruction to students with visual impairments, enabling them to travel safely, efficiently, and independently in their environment.

Responsibilities:

• Conduct comprehensive assessments of students' orientation and mobility needs.
• Develop and implement individualized education programs (IEPs) with measurable goals and objectives related to orientation and mobility.
• Provide direct instruction to students on orientation and mobility skills, including the use of assistive devices (e.g., canes, adaptive mobility devices) and techniques.
• Adapt instruction and materials to meet the diverse needs of students with varying ages, abilities, and visual impairments.
• Collaborate with teachers, parents, and other professionals to integrate orientation and mobility instruction into the student's overall educational program.
• Provide consultation and training to school staff and parents regarding visual impairment and orientation and mobility.
• Maintain accurate and up-to-date student records, including progress reports and IEP documentation.
• Participate in IEP meetings and other team meetings as required.
• Stay current with best practices and developments in the field of orientation and mobility.

Qualifications:

• Master's degree in Orientation and Mobility.
• Certification as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS) by the Academy for Certification of Vision Rehabilitation and Education Professionals (ACVREP).
• Valid North Carolina license to practice as an Orientation and Mobility Therapist.
• Experience providing orientation and mobility services to students with visual impairments in an educational setting.
• Strong knowledge of visual impairment, its impact on learning and development, and effective instructional strategies.
• Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work effectively with students, parents, and school staff from diverse backgrounds.
• Proficiency in using assistive technology and adaptive equipment.
• Ability to manage caseload effectively and prioritize tasks.
