We are seeking a dependable and motivated Instrument Man to join our surveying team. This entry-level position is ideal for individuals looking to build a career in land surveying while gaining hands-on field experience. In this role, you will assist the survey crew with daily operations and support a variety of surveying projects, including boundary surveys, platting surveys, topographic surveys, construction staking, as-built surveys, ALTA/NSPS land title surveys, and lot surveys. The successful candidate will be eager to learn new processes, work effectively as part of a team, and perform essential field duties in a safe and efficient manner. This is an outdoor position that requires daily travel to project sites, which may include urban, suburban, and remote locations. Reliable attendance is critical, as team members travel and work together to ensure safety and project success. This position reports directly to the Crew Chief and offers an excellent opportunity for professional growth within the surveying industry.
Role and responsibilities
· Accurately runs and adjusts survey instruments, including GPS, robotic total stations, level, and other electronic measuring devices with electronic data collecting capabilities.
· Able to set up equipment, like a traverse control.
· Set up jobs in the data collector.
· Scanning field notes and uploading job, text, and RAW files.
· Taking accurate notes in the field book.
· Able to identify all material needed for a job (lathe, rebar, hubs, caps, mails, discs, flagging, etc.)
· Utilize a hammer correctly to drive rebar, hubs, and lathes into the ground.
· Read, use, and care for a tape measure correctly.
· Able to use a prism rod and metal finder correctly.
· Using a shovel correctly to dig a plug.
· Familiarize/maintain truck tools and equipment and ensure the truck is organized and clean.
· Able to identify property corners.
· Use legible handwriting on the lathe (LETTERS AND NUMBERS) so everyone can understand your writing.
· Using excellent verbal and written communication skills to communicate questions and/or troubleshoot with crew members efficiently.
· Able to identify and record horizontal and vertical errors.
· Must be able and willing to travel and work in other cities, including urban and remote areas.
· Other duties assigned by the crew chief.
Qualifications and Education Requirements
· High school education requires a college education, including a math, geometry, and trigonometry background.
· CST Certification or Drone License (Preferred, Not Required)
· Minimum two years of experience operating survey instruments, collecting field information, and performing field computation. (Preferred Not Required)
Competencies and personal attributes
· Able to learn and use a variety of computer programs.
· Must possess practical written and oral communication skills.
· Demonstrated ability to identify sources of measurements.
· Ability to work well with and take coaching and directions from others.
Physical Demand
The physical demand described here is representative of those that an employee must meet to perform the essential function of this job successfully. Fieldwork involves working outdoors in all types of weather, walking long distances, and standing for an extended period while measurements are taken. While performing these duties, an employee must frequently sit, talk, hear, stand, walk, lift > 50lbs, and use hands and fingers to feel, handle, or operate objects, tools, or controls.
Schedule
Availability and regular schedule for this role are Monday-Friday, 6:30 am-3:30 pm, or a 4/10 Schedule of 4 days of 10 Hours per Day.
Travel
To perform this position’s duties, travel will be required to respective job sites in Central Florida and within Florida.
