Fiber Technician

NextGen is seeking a Network Services Technician to install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair telecommunications services and equipment for residential and small business customers. About the Role This is a hands‑on field position supporting telephone, video, broadband, fiber, copper, DSL, FTTH, cable TV, and Wi‑Fi services. The technician will work independently in the field, interact directly with customers, and participate in an on‑call rotation after training. Responsibilities Install and repair telephone, video, broadband, and special services in fiber and copper plant environments. Install, troubleshoot, and repair copper twisted‑pair telephone plant and cable TV plan. Install FTTH services and configure Wi‑Fi equipment at customer premises. Install fiber and copper enclosures and inside wiring according to company specifications. Troubleshoot DSL, cable internet, Wi‑Fi, fiber, and copper service issues. Locate faults in network facilities and restore service during outages or interruptions. Use test equipment and record readings, including OTDR, TDR, and related diagnostic equipment. Perform fiber splicing using a fiber‑splicing machine. Provide professional customer service in homes and small businesses. Maintain vehicles, tools, supplies, and equipment in a neat and organized manner. Work with contractors and other departments as needed. Perform other duties assigned by the Director or Manager of Network Service. Qualifications Experience with copper twisted‑pair telephone plant installation, troubleshooting, or repair. Experience with cable TV plant installation, troubleshooting, or repair. Knowledge of networking involving DSL, cable internet, FTTH, FTTx, or Wi‑Fi. Understanding of basic low‑voltage wiring in residential or small business environments. Familiarity with 802.11 wireless networking. Ability to work independently and troubleshoot technical issues logically. Strong verbal communication and customer service skills. Ability to work safely, efficiently, and under pressure. Knowledge of fiber and copper color codes and identification. Associate degree in a related technical field or equivalent hands‑on experience. Fiber‑splicing experience preferred but not required. Training may be provided to motivated candidates with a strong technical foundation and willingness to learn. Schedule and Work Conditions Must be available for overtime, nights, weekends, holidays, and inclement‑weather work as needed. May work a Monday‑Friday or Tuesday‑Saturday schedule. Must participate in a nighttime on‑call rotation after training. Must be willing to attend training that may require travel and overnight stays. Work is performed indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions. Physical Requirements Ability to climb ladders and poles. Ability to stoop, crawl, kneel, and work under homes or in confined areas. Ability to lift more than 100 pounds when required. Ability to identify fiber and copper color codes. Must be comfortable working at heights. Driver and Vehicle Requirements Must operate company vehicles; therefore, must have a valid driver’s license.
