Job Description Withum's Exempt Organizations Tax Services Group is a team of tax specialists that ensure tax reporting obligations are met accurately and timely, while minimizing or deferring payments of taxes. With a deep understanding of international, U.S. federal, state, and local regulations—including our affiliation with HLB International—this team helps develop economical tax strategies worldwide. Services include Business, Individual, State & Local tax, R&D Tax Credit, and International and Private Client services. As an Employee Benefits Tax Manager, you will be based in Maryland, New Jersey, NYC, Philadelphia, San Ramon, or Seattle. You will focus on federal and state compliance filings for multi‑employer (Taft‑Harley) and single‑employer plans. You will lead all aspects of tax engagements, supervise and mentor staff, and maintain relationships with clients. Withum values teamwork and client service excellence. How You'll Spend Your Time This role leads the preparation, review, and filing of Form 5500 series returns (including applicable schedules/attachments and related filings) and Forms 990 and 990‑T (including for Large Pension Trusts with Unrelated Business Income Tax and VEBA Trusts (501(c)(9))), coordinating with clients, auditors, and internal teams to ensure accurate, timely, and compliant submissions. Review all State unrelated business income tax filings and related compliance deliverables, ensuring accurate reporting and coordination of deliverables to provide excellent client service. Research and resolve exempt organization tax issues. Identify and implement tax‑planning opportunities. Coaching, mentoring, and developing staff, including reviewing work, providing actionable feedback, and supporting professional growth through technical and non‑technical training and day‑to‑day guidance. Participate in internal and external learning, such as webinars, technical updates, and practice initiatives, to remain current and share knowledge with the team. Qualifications Bachelor's Degree in Accounting CPA license, JD, or Master of Science in Taxation is required At least 5 years of experience in a public accounting tax department, with experience leading multiple engagements and supervising staff Excellent analytical and technical tax skills Knowledge of 990, 990‑T, and 5500 returns Knowledge and expertise related to Unrelated Business Income Taxation of exempt organizations and pension trusts Exceptional client service and communication skills with a demonstrated ability to develop and maintain outstanding client relationships Ability to manage multiple engagements and competing projects in a rapidly growing, fast‑paced, interactive, results‑based team environment Strong leadership, training, and mentoring skills, coupled with excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills to represent the firm well to client management Excellent analytical, organizational, project management skills, and strong attention to detail Ability to travel as needed The compensation range for this position is $105,000 – $190,000 and varies by location. For candidates residing in California, New Jersey, New York City, Maryland, Pennsylvania, or Washington, salary ranges are: California $135,000 – $175,000; Maryland $120,000 – $150,000; New Jersey $105,000 – $190,000; New York City $110,000 – $180,000; Washington state $135,000 – $175,000.
