NURSING SUPERVISOR (Troy Medical Campus, Multispecialty Clinics)

Job Summary

Purpose of Position:

To assist the Senior Nursing Director in planning and management of the patient care services at the Troy Medical Campus, to include, but not limited to, the following specialties: Center for Reproductive Medicine, Transplant, Urogynecology, Urology-Men's Health, Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, Orthopaedic Surgery, and Cardiovascular Medicine. To provide professional nursing leadership and administrative direction for nursing practice for Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, Medical Assistants, and, as indicated, other assistive personnel. To participate as an active member of the leadership team in the applicable clinics, providing daily assessment of nursing and medical assistant work, facilitating continuous improvement of health care services, and transition care towards the mission and goals of University of Michigan Health. To ensure quality of nursing services provided to patients.

Organizational Relationships:

Supervision Received: Administratively responsible to the Senior Nursing Director, Troy Medical Campus, for nursing and clinical practice, administration of applicable collective bargaining agreements, and provision of operational leadership. Works collaboratively with all members of the leadership teams of multiple departments/services.

Supervision Exercised:

Responsible for professional practice and clinical competence for regular and temporary Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, and Medical Assistants. Works collaboratively with the clinic management teams in the management of support staff.

Responsibilities*

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities:

Personnel Management

• Creates job postings, recruits, interviews and selects clinical staff. Works collaboratively with leadership teams in the hiring process.
• Manages staffing and scheduling of clinical staff. Assists the Senior Nursing Director in determining adequate complements of staff, scope of staff roles and appropriate workload.
• Manages or facilitates nursing and other clinical relief staffing for multiple clinics
• Provides supervision, counsel, discipline, and completes performance evaluation of nurses and medical assistants with feedback from the senior nursing director, faculty, peer groups, and clinic leadership teams.
• Manages the orientation and competency evaluation of nursing and medical assistant staff, in collaboration with the education nurse coordinator.

Clinical Practice

• Serves as a role model, mentor and expert resource to nursing and clinical assistive staff in the provision of direct patient care.
• Provides leadership for the development, implementation and evaluation of standards of nursing practice and interdisciplinary clinical guidelines.
• Facilitates and supports a nursing and clinical practice environment in which empowerment, responsibility, autonomy, accountability, collaboration and peer review are exercised.
• Develops standard process and protocols to minimize variation, support efficient workflows, and confirm the right work is performed by the right role.

Support of Clinical Operations

• Participates in planning and problem-solving of daily unit operations and priorities of patient services.
• Attend all workload meetings, working with workload chairs and discuss any findings and or action plans with the Senior Nursing Director.
• Participates in the development, implementation, and evaluation of unit goals and objectives.
• Manages, directly and in collaboration with others, staffing, scheduling, benchmarking, work redesign and variances.
• Organizes and facilitates unit-based educational activities and in-services.
• Assures compliance with regulatory programs' standards related to clinical practice. Provides leadership, assists and advises Administrators, Medical Directors, in satisfying other regulatory standards.
• Write, revise, interpret and implement University and Health System policies and procedures.
• Assists in the planning and implementation of new or expanded services and programs.
• Provides interface and liaison communications regarding programs external to the unit which have implications for nursing staff.
• Represents nursing, Ambulatory Care Services and/or the clinical department(s) or unit(s) on assigned committees.

Quality Management and Research

• Participates in and conducts the analysis of data, assists in the development of strategies to improve care management within the area or unit.
• Participates in and supports the involvement of nursing staff in unit quality improvement metrics/activities.
• Provides leadership to staff in understanding and applying quality improvement principles and adoption of evidence-based changes in practice into daily work. Promotes the integration of research findings into clinical practice.
• Supports research activities on the unit, as indicated.
• Works closely with each team to define and measure productivity, holding teams accountable to expectations, and ensuring work performed is within their scope of practice.

Professional Development and Education

• Facilitates the education of health sciences students.
• Develops self professionally through continuing education, professional reading, participation in professional organizations and networking.
• Evaluates own performance periodically with the Senior Nursing Director.

Required Qualifications*

Applicant must meet one of the following: * Bachelors of Science in Nursing OR * Associates degree or diploma in Nursing and a Masters degree in Nursing.

• Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the state of Michigan.
• Minimum five (5) years of RN experience
• Minimum two (2) years of recent (within the last 5 years), progressively responsible clinical experience in an adult specialties service line.
• Demonstrated leadership skills, including creative and effective problem-solving, ability to effectively collaborate within a multidisciplinary team, and ability to direct nursing practice and apply critical thinking skills/judgment to a variety of situations.
• Nurse Leadership certification or completion of a nursing leadership certification within two (2) years of accepting this position. Certification is expected to be maintained while in this leadership role. Examples include Certified Nurse Manager and Leader (CNML) or, Nurse Executive (NE-BC). Desired Qualifications*

• Broad clinical experience across multiple ambulatory care specialties.
• Two (2) or more years of experience in a supervisory/management role
• Masters degree in Nursing
• Certification in leadership/administration, clinical specialty, or ambulatory care.
• Two (2) years of recent (within the last 5 years) clinical experience in medical or surgical specialties.
• Experience in managing budgets, aligning resources
• Experience with telephone triage
