Role Purpose

To maintain, service, diagnose, and repair vehicles and equipment in the field and shop as needed, ensuring high levels of safety, quality, and productivity. The Field Mechanic contributes to minimizing downtime, optimizing equipment performance, supporting project schedules, and upholding Diamond Surface, Inc. standards for safety, documentation, and customer service.

Key Accountabilities / Responsibilities

Essential Functions

• Perform preventative maintenance and repairs on semi tractors, trailers, walk behind saws, and various other construction equipment in the field and shop as needed.
• Diagnose and repair diesel and gas engines, including use of computer diagnostic tools and manufacturer procedures when needed.
• Diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and pneumatic issues on vehicles and equipment; read schematics, wiring diagrams, repair manuals, and technical procedures to support accurate repairs.
• Perform scheduled maintenance, inspections, and unscheduled repairs such as brakes, filters, driveline components, engine-related repairs, trailer repairs, and equipment troubleshooting.
• Disassemble and assemble components as required; inspect, measure, install replacement parts, test systems, and confirm repairs are completed safely and correctly.
• Document all repairs and maintenance, including labor time, parts used, service notes, daily service logs, and work order completion details.
• Communicate repair status, equipment concerns, parts needs, and downtime risks to the Shop Supervisor, Operations, project teams, and other stakeholders as needed.
• Support preventive maintenance programs by completing inspections and services on schedule, identifying high-risk units, and recommending repair timing to reduce breakdowns.
• Assist with DOT/annual inspection readiness and maintenance recordkeeping for tractors, trailers, repairs, recalls, and inspections as applicable.
• Coordinate with the shop team, vendors, and outside service providers for specialty diagnostics, tire service, welding/fabrication, machining, or other repairs when needed.
• Maintain assigned tools, service truck inventory, parts, and work areas in a clean, organized, and safe condition; report needed repairs or replacement of shop/service equipment.
• Ensure compliance with safety protocols, housekeeping standards, PPE usage, spill prevention practices, and environmental regulations, including proper handling and disposal of fluids and waste.
• Come prepared with basic mechanic tools - see attached list for suggested tools.

Working Conditions / Physical Demands

• Work is performed in field/project environments and shop settings with exposure to noise, fumes, dust, moving vehicles/equipment, uneven surfaces, traffic/work zones, and outside weather conditions.
• Frequently required to lift, carry, push, or pull up to 50 lbs.; climb ladders, bend, squat, twist, stand for extended periods; work under vehicles/equipment or in tight spaces.

Required Competencies / Skills

• Strong mechanical aptitude and diagnostic skills; ability to troubleshoot diesel and gas engines and related vehicle/equipment systems.
• Experience with heavy-duty vehicles/equipment (or specify type: trucks, trailers, off-road equipment, etc.).
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team; strong communication skills (verbal & written).

• Time-management and prioritization skills; ability to manage multiple repairs, respond to breakdowns, and meet project/equipment deadlines.

• Commitment to safety, quality workmanship and customer service.
• Computer literacy: ability to use diagnostic software, track parts and labor electronically.

Required Education / Credentials / Experience

• 3+ years of experience as a heavy-duty mechanic or equivalent; or completion of a relevant technical/vocational program.
• Valid drivers license and clean driving record; CDL (Class A) license preferred.
• Ability to obtain/maintain any required state or federal credentials/licences.
