Direct Support Professional – Job Description Overview A Direct Support Professional (DSP) provides personalized assistance and encouragement to individuals with developmental, intellectual, or physical disabilities, helping them live as independently as full participants in their communities. Key Responsibilities Assist clients with daily living activities (e.g., personal hygiene, meal preparation, medication reminders). Foster independence by teaching life‑skills, social interaction, and community‑navigation techniques. Monitor and document client progress, behaviors, and health changes. Collaborate with case managers, therapists, and families to implement individualized support plans. Advocate for clients’ rights and ensure a safe, respectful environment. Respond to emergencies, providing first aid or crisis intervention as needed. Qualifications High school diploma or GED; Associate’s degree in human services or related field preferred. Prior experience working with people with disabilities (volunteer or paid). CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain). Clear background check and driver’s license (if transporting clients). Essential Skills Strong communication and active‑listening abilities. Patience, empathy, and a positive, supportive attitude. Ability to problem‑solve quickly and adapt to changing situations. Physical stamina to lift, transfer, or assist clients as required. Work Environment Community settings: homes, group homes, day programs, or supported employment sites. Schedule may include evenings, weekends, or holidays based on client needs.
