Anesthesiologist

The Physician Assistant in the Department of Anesthesia will perform pre‑operative/pre‑anesthesia assessment for patients scheduled for surgery in the UI Health Care; assist in the education of resident physicians, medical students, and nurse anesthetist students during clinic rotations; assist in research related to pre‑op assessments; participate in continuing education and training in anesthesia under a board‑certified anesthesiologist; and exercise autonomy in medical decision‑making and services provided. Position Responsibilities Review patient records including prior anesthetics, surgical and nursing work‑up, consultant work‑up, and other relevant clinical notes and testing procedures. Evaluate patients according to the standard anesthetic evaluation, including obtaining medical history, airway exam, heart and lung examination, and other clinically indicated organ systems. Perform further evaluation as directed by the staff physician. Assist patients in understanding teaching materials provided for their anesthetic. Assist patients in interpreting NPO instructions. Instruct patients regarding medications to be taken on the day of surgery, including management of insulin doses. Write orders for pre‑medication in consultation with the staff physician or clinic supervisor (e.g., EMLA cream, omeprazole, anti‑emetics). Order diagnostic tests in consultation with the staff physician or clinic supervisor. Direct requisitions for relevant outside medical records, including telephone calls to outside physicians, their offices, or hospitals. Communicate with other services within or outside the hospital to request further consultation or work‑up with the cooperation of the staff physician. Arrange communication of special needs or concerns to the anesthesia team. Assist in collecting information such as duration of work‑up and patient health status for optimizing clinic function; the ARNP will not analyze the data unless otherwise substituted. Make observations with the clinic director regarding patient dissatisfaction or inefficiency. Assist in teaching duties of the position to substitutes and/or replacements; also teach pre‑operative/pre‑anesthesia evaluation by example and direct instruction to junior residents or SRNA students. Establish and maintain standards of collaborative interaction among peers and employees characterized by respect, honesty, and service; ensure all unit members are held to similar standards and ethics. Other duties as assigned. Education Requirements Graduation from an accredited Physician Assistant educational program. Experience Requirements Compliance with registration and licensure requirements as specified by the Iowa Board of Physician Assistant Examiners and holding current certification by the NCCPA.
