Sexual Assault Forensic Examiner

Purpose of Position Under clinical oversight, the Sexual Assault Forensic Examiner (SAFE) serves as part of the Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) and performs forensic evidence collection for patients who report sexual assault, including evaluation and referral. The SAFE ensures the quality of collection, documentation, and preservation of forensic evidence and provides timely, compassionate, patient-centered care through data collection, physical assessment, health teaching, counseling, and supportive care to reduce further trauma and improve patient experience. The SAFE ensures optimal utilization of resources, service delivery, and compliance with NYC Health + Hospitals regulations, procedures, and standards of care. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Respond to any SAFE‑designated NYC Health + Hospitals health care setting within the borough and provide services when on call within 60 minutes of notification, including inpatient departments. Obtain informed consent and conduct suspect evidence collection, including forensic photography; adhere to chain of custody protocol. Ensure accurate collection and preservation of all forensic evidence and specimens, using the New York State Sexual Offense Evidence Collection Kit, Drug Facilitated Forensic Evidence kit (if indicated), and camera to document patient injuries per National Protocol for Sexual Assault Medical Forensic Examinations Adults/Adolescents. Accurately document findings, complete Sexual Assault Assessment forms and Crime Victim’s Board claim forms. Endorse clinically relevant examination findings to the primary treatment team (e.g., STI exposure risk, strangulation). Identify crisis intervention components and supportive techniques for sexual assault survivors. Communicate with patients and families about evidence collection, provide victim advocacy, and educate on recommended treatments such as prophylaxis and follow‑up. Consult appropriate personnel for medical treatment and engage in hand‑off with the responsible Emergency Department attending or alternate provider when available. Communicate with law enforcement and the district attorney’s office; testify as expert witness when required. Escalate all clinical and operational issues to the NYC Health + Hospitals Sexual Assault Forensic Examiner Borough Coordinator. Perform other program‑related work as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Valid New York State license and current registration to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse (RN) issued by NYSED, with at least one year of full‑time clinical post‑licensure experience; OR Valid New York State license and current registration to practice as a Nurse Practitioner (NP) issued by NYSED, with at least one year of full‑time clinical post‑licensure experience; OR Valid New York State license and current registration to practice as a Physician Assistant (PA) issued by NYSED, with at least one year of full‑time clinical post‑licensure experience; OR Valid New York State license and current registration to practice medicine, with at least one year of full‑time clinical post‑licensure experience. Completion of a Sexual Assault Forensic Examiner (SAFE) Training Program certified or approved by the New York State Department of Health; must obtain NYSDOH SAFE certification within twelve (12) months of appointment, with possible extension up to six (6) months granted at the discretion of the coordinator or director, and maintain certification for the duration of employment by completing fifteen (15) continuing medical education credits in NYSDOH‑approved coursework every three (3) years.
