About the Role At UConn Health, this class is accountable for rendering bedside care to the physically or chronically ill in cases where the services of a registered or licensed practical nurses is not required. This position will work on the Intensive Care Unit in the UConn Health University Tower in Farmington, CT. Schedule 72 hours every two weeks, 7:00 p.m. to 7:30 a.m., rotating weekends and holidays as assigned, 30 minute unpaid meal break. Minimum Qualifications Considerable interpersonal skills; ability to work with basic principles of nursing including infection control practices; ability to deal with physically and chronically ill patients; ability to learn safety and fire procedures. Special Requirements Current certification as a Nurse's Aide. Incumbents in this class must possess and maintain American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification for healthcare providers. This is the only accepted credential. Other CPR/AED credentials may be accepted at hire but incumbents will be required to obtain American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within six (6) months of hire and maintain throughout employment. Preferred Experience Current acute care inpatient hospital Nurse Aide experience on an Intensive Care Unit. Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) experience Responsibilities Maintain the highest UConn Health professional standards and values of customer care. Demonstrate effective verbal, nonverbal and written communication skills, promptly relay information to the appropriate personnel regarding patient information related to his/her condition/needs, patient changes, malfunction of equipment, and ordering supplies. Maintain a neat and orderly environment; prepare rooms for admission, including disposal of linens. Apply proper hand washing techniques and personal hygiene. Perform the following clinical skills: vital signs; routine admission and post‑op ambulation, transferring, transporting, positioning and turning patients; transfer of patients with specific needs; identify risk factors and prevention strategies for abnormal skin conditions and pressure ulcers; bathing and assisting patients with personal care, ambulation, specimen collection; and safe feeding, calorie count maintenance, intake/output documentation in the patient’s EMR. Apply proper procedures for CPR/Compression’s, weights/scales, EKG monitoring, glucose meter, blood draws, and bladder scanner. Identify Personal Protective Equipment and proper procedures for donning and doffing; adhere to isolation procedures according to UConn Health; apply universal precautions when obtaining and handling specimens, disposing needles, sharps, and red bag waste; and adhere to HIPAA privacy regulations in all settings. Perform any related duties as required. Working Conditions Incumbents in this class may need to lift patients and perform other physically tiring work, may be exposed to communicable and/or infectious diseases, and may be at risk of injury from assaultive patients. Compensation Full‑time equivalent minimum salary: $51,148; hourly rate $25.11 plus shift differentials.
