Assistant Professor Of Graphic DesignThe Department of Fine Arts at Barry University in Miami Shores, Florida, invites applications for a full-time, continuing track position of Assistant Professor of Graphic Design, beginning August 15, 2025.The Department of Fine Arts offers undergraduate degrees in Graphic Design, Studio Art, and Photography in the Visual Arts and, Music, Theatre/Dance in the Performing Arts.Our BFA Graphic Design curriculum prepares students for the field as creative professionals in both the traditional print environment and emerging interactive technologies.Primary responsibilities include teaching a 4/4 undergraduate load that covers a variety of graphic design topics. The candidate should demonstrate thorough knowledge in graphic design and web/interactive pedagogies, as well as feel comfortable teaching the industry standard design software.The Assistant Professor of Graphic Design should also be prepared to work alongside senior faculty to build, refine, and develop curriculum and events for the program to enrich the student experience. They will also provide academic advising and mentoring to undergraduate students, including directing and supervising undergraduate exhibitions; contributing to departmental, college, university, and professional service; and engaging in sustained scholarship.This is a 9-month position effective 8/15/2025.Essential FunctionsApplicants should:Be proficient in the theories and fundamentals of graphic design and web/interactive technologies and possess a working knowledge of the Adobe Creative Suite (specifically Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Dreamweaver, and XD and/or Figma) in a Macintosh computer environment and understand industry expectations.Articulate a vision for a rigorous curriculum in graphic design that prepares students to succeed professionally by cultivating their technical, aesthetic, and creative processes.Emphasize visual problem-solving that will equip students with the tools necessary to give visual form to ideas, information, and emotion using both print and interactive (web) image-making skills, layout, color theory, typography, and storytelling.Adapt to technological and philosophical shifts in the design industry and have the capability to modify courses when needed to meet such shifts.Be willing and able to teach in person but can adapt to a blended (hybrid), online environment if necessary.Responsibilities:Organize and teach 4/4 undergraduate courses related to graphic design and web/interactive technologies through planning, delivery, and assessment.Use CANVAS to organize course work for students.Plan and implement various activities, assignments, and projects to maximize the effectiveness of instruction and student participation.Demonstrate familiarity with required industry standard hardware and software and keep up with upgrades and advancements.Demonstrate characteristics of a professional digital designer, including creativity and attention to detail.Keep current on curriculum developments and trends in education.Demonstrate an active professional design studio practice or creative scholarship to meet promotion and retention requirements.Meet service expectations within the department, college, and university.Experience coordinating design exhibitions.Qualifications/RequirementsMFA (Master of Fine Arts) in Graphic Design, Visual Communications, Web Design, or a related area of study.
