Health Unit Coordinator 1 – Emergency Room – General Hospital Location: US:WV:Charleston Employment Type: Employee Job Summary Coordinate the clerical processes and perform various direct patient care activities, procedures, and other indirect services under the direction of a registered nurse. Responsibilities Effectively prioritize job responsibilities in an environment with multiple demands while demonstrating willingness to meet the needs of the customer. Activate and respond appropriately to emergent and urgent situations. Coordinate the clerical processes for admission, transfer, discharge, and death for all patients inter- and intra-hospital in a timely and efficient manner per policy. Maintain patient medical records regarding thesis, labeling, and providing appropriate forms for documentation according to policy. Legibly and accurately transcribe orders using knowledge of policy, procedures, and legal documentation on patient records. Use courteous, positive, and effective verbal and non-verbal communication with interdepartmental stakeholders. Maintain confidentiality of patient, staff, unit, and institution information. Identify and report real or potential customer concerns. Assist with unit maintenance related to ordering and receiving supplies, medications, manuals, and equipment. Assist in the orientation of new staff and act as a resource to new interns, residents, RNs, and other health team members regarding procedures related to computerized ordering of clinical services and maintenance of medical records. Assist with procedures as determined by hospital policy, procedure, and regulatory guidelines. Maintain a neat, clean, safe, and cost-effective patient and unit environment. Provide optimum assistance to the medical and nursing staff by providing/direct patient care, including activities of daily living and daily assignments as delegated by RN. Operate and maintain all applicable equipment in the work area. Accurately monitor, analyze, and interpret rhythm/arrhythmias. Provide appropriate documentation and communication related to interpretation. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Patient Group Knowledge (Only applies to positions with direct patient contact). The employee must possess and demonstrate, by the end of the orientation period, the knowledge and skills necessary to provide developmentally appropriate assessment, treatment or care as defined by the department’s identified patient ages. Specific competency includes: obtaining and interpreting information in terms of patient needs, knowledge of growth and development, and understanding the range of treatment needed by the patients. Competency Statement: Must demonstrate competency through an initial orientation and ongoing competency validation to independently perform tasks and additional duties as specified in the job description and the unit/department specific competency checklist. Perform work in accordance with all departmental pay practices and scheduling policies, including but not limited to overtime, various shift work, and on-call situations. Perform work in alignment with the overall mission and strategic plan of the organization. Follow organizational and departmental policies and procedures, as applicable. Perform related duties as assigned. Education High School Diploma or GED (Required). Basic knowledge of Medical Assistant and/or Medical Terminology.
