Transportation Operations Technician I

Overview The Agency of Transportation is seeking a Transportation Operations Technician I. This position is responsible for various tasks related to highway maintenance, such as repairing guardrails, cutting trees/brush, patching roads, picking litter, ditching, and more. In the winter months, this position will also assist with plowing and salting, and overtime may be required. Employees may be required to report to work outside of their area/work schedule and must be reachable by phone. Dangers are present near heavy equipment, hazardous materials, and roadside litter. Employees may be exposed to blood and airborne pathogens, and work is conducted on roads with traffic, emergencies such as flood, ice, snow, hazardous materials. An incumbent must be able to use tools and equipment common to maintenance work and lift materials. Participation in a random drug and alcohol‑testing program is required prior to operation of vehicles or equipment. Considerable overtime work is required, particularly during the winter months, and is considered a condition of employment. Minimum Qualifications Applicants must be at least 18 years old. No education or experience required. Preferred Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent. Special Requirements A valid driver’s license is required. An incumbent must live within reasonable proximity of the assigned workstation. Possession of a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is required for successful completion of the initial probation period. An incumbent must complete all VTTC required coursework within six (6) months or be enrolled.
