The St. Cloud VA Health Care System provides comprehensive medical services to veterans, including primary care, specialty care, mental health services, and rehabilitation. Located in St. Cloud, Minnesota, this facility is part of the Veterans Health Administration and offers state-of-the-art outpatient services, a 40-bed community living center, and a robust range of support programs, such as PTSD treatment and substance abuse recovery. Nurse Practitioner Responsibilities:

• Shall admit and coordinate all aspects of care for hospitalized medical patients including admission, appropriate placement within the hospital, evaluation and treatment, discussion of end-of-life preferences, consultations with sub-specialists, and timely and proactive discharge planning.
• Will be responsible and accountable for assessment, diagnosis, and management of patient problems, including prescription of pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic intervention.
• The scope of practice of a nurse practitioner includes, but is not limited to, each of the following:
  • Ordering diagnostic and therapeutic tests and procedures, performing those tests and procedures when using health care equipment, and interpreting and using the results of diagnostic and therapeutic tests and procedures ordered by the advanced practice registered nurse or another health care professional.
  • Ordering treatments, ordering, or applying appropriate medical devices, and using nursing, medical, therapeutic, and corrective measures to treat illness and improve health status.
  • Providing palliative and end-of-life care.
  • Providing advanced counseling, patient education, health education, and patient advocacy.
  • Shall provide care to patients in critical care/acute care settings in conformance with VA policies. Shall assess, stabilize, and determine the disposition of inpatients with emergent conditions consistent with medical staff policy regarding emergency and consultative call services. This includes running code teams and rapid response teams.
• Core privileges in this specialty include the procedures (listed below) and such other procedures that are extensions of the same techniques and skills. This is not intended to be an all-encompassing procedures list. It defines the types of activities/procedures/privileges that the majority of practitioners in this specialty perform at the VA and inherent activities/procedures/privileges requiring similar skill sets and techniques:
  • Abscess incision and drainage
  • Thoracentesis
  • Nasogastric tube insertion
  • Reinsertion of gastric tube
  • fecal occult blood testing
  • paracentesis
  • placement of transurethral catheter
  • Aspiration and injection of joints except ankle and hip injection of lateral epicondyle (tennis elbow)
  • removal of lines/tubes
  • lumbar puncture

Nurse Practitioner Requirements:

• Must have a Master's degree in nursing.
• Must have a current and unrestricted license in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States or the District of Columbia.
• Must be certified by the AANP.
• Must have a current Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification from a provider recognized by the American Heart Association.
