Why We Need YouThe Education Fellow will deliver educational programming daily/weekly that exemplifies educational excellence and guest service to engage and excite our audience in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) content. The fellow will teach across the Museum's channels, including on stages, in galleries, and online through social media and prerecorded video. Through this year-long educational fellowship with the option to extend for a second year, they will learn about and experience science and education and their implementation in a museum to hone informal education skills while exploring career directions.
- Support the Museum as it moves towards its 2030 vision and attendance goals of 2M visitors annually. Provide best in class educational experiences to guests in the Museum's exhibit halls, often teaching to audiences of 200+.
- Teach in the Public Science Common – the world's premiere stage for science learning. Develop and present programs that utilize the full suite of available media tools including video, immersive projections with LIDAR tracking, and AV theater effects.
- Teach various STEM programming regularly each week across all education channels.
- Deliver programming in specialized Museum environments such as the Engineering Design Workshop and the Planetarium, gaining experience presenting in immersive settings and handling live-animals while ensuring safe practices and engaging diverse audiences.
- Learn and help develop new programming across all education channels as needed (including 20-minute stage presentations, 1-minute video content and more).
- Collaborate with others in the department to help maintain 1 - 2 educational areas or critical resources, such as Teaching spaces and stages.
- Learn to teach responsibly and safely using Museum resources, including scientific demonstration equipment in the Theater of Electricity, chemicals, live animals, biological materials, and Museum vehicles.
- Travel offsite to visit schools or communities as needed.
- Regularly work a weekend day on a Tuesday-Saturday schedule.
- Occasionally work a flexible schedule, including some holidays, some evenings, and at various other times to accommodate serving guests during school vacations, evening programs, and other special projects and requests.
- This opportunity is a full time (40 hr/week) position available starting September 8, 2026, ending Labor Day 2027 with the option to extend for a second year until Labor Day 2028.
Schedule: Tuesday-Saturday or Sunday-Thursday
What You'll Accomplish- Learn, develop, and deliver educational programming daily/weekly that exemplifies educational excellence and guest service to engage and excite our audiences in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). Become versatile in the department to develop and present at least 4-6 programs for school and public audiences in multiple venues onsite and the community. Continually learn new programs and activities to be a contributing educator for the diverse needs of the department across all education channels, including presentations in specialized environments such as the Engineering Design Workshop and Planetarium, as well as in-gallery interpretations, stage presentations, digital content presented online via live broadcast and prerecorded videos, and outreach, including in-community programs.
- Participate in the creation of new and engaging programming for all education channels. Assist in the development of educational goals and support materials. The programs and activities must contain accurate, relevant, up-to-date information and be innovative in pedagogy. The programs must be safe, accessible, exciting, and fun and make personal connections that engage the most diverse audience possible.
- Support the maintenance/management of educational materials and education spaces (stages, studios, classrooms, etc.) and the various equipment used. Responsibly and safely use Museum resources - including scientific demonstration equipment, chemicals, live animals (if appropriate), biological materials, Museum vehicles, and others - to ensure the safety of staff, volunteers, visitors, and materials.
- The goal of the fellowship is to learn how to teach STEM concepts and practices in different museum environments (including onsite, online, and in the community). Perform assigned duties, personal projects, and studies to gain a greater understanding and insight into learning in informal settings.
- Participate in institutional-wide learning, initiatives, and professional development activities that contribute to creating positive staff and visitor experiences. Support access and belonging practices to continually ingrain these into the Museum's offerings and ensure a welcoming experience for everyone.
- Respond in real time to guest questions and concerns in the exhibit halls. Follow department guidelines for handling different situations by bringing any issue immediately to a manager or senior staff.
- Act as a representative of the Museum in the community.
- Perform other work-related duties as required by the Manager.
Education:
- Post-high school coursework, technical degree, associate's degree, business or vocational certificate.
Experience:
- One (1) year or more in a STEM field or education background.
- Demonstrated communication skills (verbal/oratory and written)
- Demonstrated ability to successfully manage multiple tasks simultaneously, paying close attention to detail
- Demonstrated ability to work both independently and in collaboration with a team
- Ability to work onsite at the Museum of Science
- Content knowledge in a STEM field is preferred
- Valid driver's license and willingness to drive in urban, rural, and highway settings preferred
- Strong preference for bilingual or multilingual candidates. Ability to deliver educational programming in Spanish or another language prevalent in the greater Boston area is highly desirable, and fellows may have opportunities to present in multiple languages based on audience needs
