Liability Major Case Specialist - New York City, NY

Job Description Veterans, Transitioning Military, National Guard and Reserve Members, Military Spouses, Wounded Warriors, and their Caregivers: This position is available to those groups. Under general supervision, you will investigate, evaluate, reserve, negotiate, and resolve assigned serious and complex specialty claims, providing quality claim handling throughout the claim life cycle and serving as an expert resource to claim professionals, business partners, customers, and stakeholders. This role does not manage staff. The position is eligible for a sign‑on bonus. What Is the Opportunity? The role focuses on severe claims, with an average full damage value ranging from $500,000 to several million dollars across a multi‑million dollar portfolio. Responsibilities Directly handle assigned severe claims. Provide quality customer service and ensure file quality, timely coverage analysis, and communication with insured parties. Work with the Manager on use of Claim Coverage Counsel as needed. Investigate each claim through contact with policyholders, accounts, claimants, law enforcement agencies, witnesses, agents, medical providers, and technical experts to determine liability, damages, and contribution potential. Interview witnesses and stakeholders; take statements as strategically appropriate. Complete outside investigation when required per case specifics. Engage in the identification, selection, and direction of appropriate internal and externals such as subrogation, risk control, nurse consultants, and fraud investigators. Verify the nature and extent of injury or property damage by reviewing records and documentation. Maintain claim files and document all activities per established procedures. Develop and employ creative resolution strategies. Ensure prompt and proper disposition of all claims within delegated authority. Negotiate claim disposition with insureds and legal representatives. Recognize and implement alternate means of resolution. Manage litigated claims; develop litigation plans with counsel, including discovery and legal expenses. Utilize evaluation documentation tools in accordance with department guidelines. Proactively review Claim File Analysis for adherence to quality standards and trend analysis. Utilize diary management system to ensure timely claim handling and evaluate liability and damages exposure at required intervals. Establish and maintain proper indemnity and expense reserves. Provide guidance to underwriting business partners regarding loss reserves. Recommend cases for discussion at roundtables. Attend and present at roundtables/authority discussions to collaborate on technical expertise and improve payout outcomes. Share experience and knowledge of creative resolution techniques to improve claim results of others. Apply claim quality management protocols and metrics, documenting rationale for any deviations. Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications Bachelor's Degree. 10+ years of claim handling experience, including 5–7 years with serious injury and complex liability claims. Extensive knowledge of various business line products. Excellent negotiation and customer service skills. Advanced coverage, liability, and damages analysis skills with expert understanding of litigation in state and federal courts, including case and statutory law. Extensive claim and/or legal experience and technical expertise to evaluate severe and complex claims. Ability to make independent decisions on assigned cases without supervisor involvement. Openness to input and sharing ideas with others. Deep understanding of commercial lines products, policy language, exclusions, ISO forms, and effective claims practices. Strong coaching, influence, and persuasion skills. Advanced written and verbal communication skills to synthesize complex data for varied audiences. Ability to adapt to and support cultural change. Strong technology aptitude; proficiency with business technology tools for research, tracking, and communication. Advanced analytical thinking, judgment/decision making, communication, negotiation, insurance contract knowledge, principles of investigation, value determination, settlement techniques, litigation management, and medical terminology. Must Have Four years of bodily injury litigation claim handling experience or comparable claim litigation experience.
