Management Alliance Programs, Inc
Job Description
Job Description
Leader in data center construction is seeking an energy marshal for a long term contract opportunity
Port Washington
Start Date roughly 10/12/26, flexible
Average 58 hour work week (5x10s+8). Potential for additional overtime during commissioning stages.
Job completion September 2028
Travel allowance negotiable depending on location.
An energy marshal is a specialized safety authority who controls and oversees hazardous energy protocols, system isolations, and safe energization during the construction, testing, and commissioning of large facilities like data centers
- Enforcing Lockout/Tagout (LOTO): Acts as the central point of authority for isolating electrical, mechanical, or other hazardous energy sources.
- Coordinating Safe Energization: Approves step-by-step plans before high-voltage equipment, backup generators, or switchgear are powered on.
- Conducting Audits: Performs spot-checks and safety inspections to verify zero-energy states before work begins.
- Cross-Trade Communication: Manages communication between contractors, engineers, and commissioning teams to prevent conflicting work on live systems.
Energy Marshal is not just a safety observer—they are a trained authority on energy isolation procedures, lockout/tagout (LOTO) protocols, verification testing, and energy restoration coordination . They are responsible for implementing and enforcing the energy control program on site.
Key responsibilities include:
- Ensuring all lockout/tagout procedures are in place and rigorously followed
- Reviewing and approving energy isolation plans for complex or high-risk activities
- Verifying that affected personnel are properly trained and informed
- Coordinating across trades to avoid conflicting or unsafe work on energized systems
- Conducting audits and spot-checks on hazardous energy controls
- Managing the turnover and startup process with energy safety in focus
The Energy Marshal acts as the gatekeeper of LOTO compliance, ensuring that:
- Isolation points are clearly identified and locked
- Energy sources are fully dissipated (not just switched off)
- Verification testing is conducted before personnel are cleared to work
- Proper documentation is maintained and accessible
Their deep knowledge of electrical systems and safety regulations (such as OSHA 1910.147 or NFPA 70E) allows them to spot oversights that less experienced personnel might miss.
One of the most hazardous phases in a data center build is commissioning —when systems begin to go live. Energizing switchgear, activating backup generators, and powering cooling infrastructure all involve significant risk if not tightly controlled.
A qualified Energy Marshal works closely with the commissioning team to develop safe, step-by-step energization plans. They manage communications across stakeholders, verify readiness, and ensure protective measures are in place before key equipment is powered on.
