Summary

The Senior Trauma Registrar (STR) oversees the day to day activities of DHR Trauma Registry Operations including registry patient tracking, data entry, data quality metrics, data display, statistical analysis and registry-related education. The STR also interacts with state, regional and national regulatory agencies to provide the required data for maintenance of designation, verification as well as national benchmarking.

Position Education/Qualifications

• High School diploma/GED
• Minimum three years' experience with computer data entry and/or Microsoft Office Suite software applications preferred.
• Good written and verbal communication skills required.
• Bilingual-English/Spanish preferred
• Able to communicate effectively with physicians, patients, nursing staff and allied health providers.
• Completed American Trauma Society (ATS) Trauma Registrar Course within 6 months of employment.
• Completed the Association for the Advancement of Automotive Medicine (AAAM), Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS) course within 6 months of employment.
• Associates Degree in health-related field or informatics is preferred
• Certified Trauma Registrar (CSTR), Abbreviated Injury Scaling Specialist (CAISS) certifications within twelve months of hire.

Responsibilities

• Maintains all patient, staff, and DHR information and documents in compliance with hospital polices regarding patient confidentiality and privacy.
• Demonstrates knowledge of the components of the Trauma Services and the functions of the Registry software.
• Assists in printing, organizing charts for abstraction and review.
• Assists in abstracting charts utilizing the Trauma Services Data Collection Forms.
• Assists in assigning AIS and ISS scores.
• Enters and maintains patient information in the Texas EMS/Trauma Registry for DHR.
• Manages the DHR Trauma Registry including maintaining a concurrent registry in compliance with the Texas Trauma Registry, National Trauma Data Bank (NTDB) and American College of Surgeons (ACS) Trauma Quality Improvement Program (TQIP) for verification, state designation and national benchmarking.
• Maintains various file types and logs (e.g. trauma admit log, trauma activation log)
• Educates team members on use of Trauma Registry software, components and ongoing system enhancements as well as data dictionary updates.
• Monitors compliance with required training including but not limited to annual TQIP user training, TQIP quizzes, open form calls and other required registrar training outlined by the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma Resources for Optimal care of the Injured Patient.
• Maintains a system for data cleaning to ensure the reliability, accuracy and completeness of the database (e.g. inter-rater reliability audits, NTDB filter criteria) in accordance with state and national regulatory requirements.
• Accurately identifies the patient population for entry and tracking into the Digital Innovations v5 Trauma Registry in compliance with the Texas Department of State health Services of EMS and Trauma requirements and DHR specific requirements (e.g. ICD-10 code, transfer, death, ICU admission, length of stay, readmission.
• Supports Trauma Performance Improvement Coordinator in preparing reports for the purposes of research, quality improvement reporting and designation/verification survey as required by ACS
• Prepares reports for purposes of registry surveillance, approved research requests, performance improvement and designation/verification survey as required by ACS
• Participates in the Trauma Performance Improvement process.
• Other duties as assigned

Other Information

• Computer literate in Microsoft Office, Outlook, and Excel.
• Experience in healthcare related services, or 1 year experience in the emergency care setting.
• Preferred familiarity with accreditation programs and functions pertaining to the Registry and Trauma Services.
• Experience in computer data entry, data bases, and data retrieval.
• Demonstrated knowledge of medical record contents and medical terminology, including anatomy and physiology concepts.
• Understands ICD-10 codes.
• Assigns AIS, and ISS scores.
• Flexible working hours required.
• Medical Terminology is essential
• AIS/ISS & ICD-10 coding experience is required
• Quality/Performance Improvement knowledge is preferred
