Job Title: Registered Nurse Profession: RN (Registered Nurse) Specialty: Surgical Acute - Medical Surgical Duration: 13 weeks Shift: 12H Nights Hours per Shift: 12 hours Experience: Minimum of 1 year License: Active Illinois license or confirmation of application process Certifications: BLS required Must-Have: Post-operative care of patients Critical thinking skills Good bedside manner Team player Description: The unit accommodates 63 beds, including private and observation beds. Patient-to-nurse ratios are 4-5 patients per RN during the day and 5-6 patients per RN at night. Common diagnoses include post-operative surgical cases, trauma, and overflow medical patients. The role involves dressing changes, wound care, IV therapy, pain management, drains, NG tubes, and TPN management. Heparin is the only titratable drip. Charge nurses are present, and they do not take patient assignments. House supervisors are available 24/7. Patient care techs assist with vital signs, accu-checks, activities of daily living, turning, and ambulation. Respiratory therapy manages nebulization while RNs handle inhalers and CPAP placement. Telemetry is available, but RNs do not interpret their own strips as this is managed by central station monitor techs. Shifts follow a 0700-1930 schedule for days and a 1930-0730 schedule for nights. Weekend shifts are required every other weekend, with holiday rotation every other holiday. Travelers may float to units with the same level of experience. Scrubs of any color may be worn. The orientation includes shifts with a preceptor along with professional orientation.
