Position Title Helene Recovery Vegetation Management Crew Member – AmeriCorps Location & Service Site Bahama, North Carolina. Project sites in the Appalachian and Grandfather Ranger Districts, Pisgah National Forest. Terms of Service Start Date: September 15, 2026 End Date: November 18, 2026 AmeriCorps Slot Classification: 300 Hours Districts: Appalachian Ranger District (4 positions) and Grandfather Ranger District (4 positions) Job Summary Crew members will support Hurricane Helene disaster recovery by removing invasive plant species, reducing hazardous fuels, and improving ecosystem health. Work involves brush cutting, mechanical and chemical treatments on rugged terrain in inclement weather. Responsibilities Perform hazard fuel reduction and vegetation management using brush cutters, hand saws, loppers, and other tools. Remove invasive, non-native plant species. Improve timber stands and execute ecological restoration techniques. Remove debris and clear corridors in storm-impacted areas. Follow a 9-day on / 5-day off schedule with 10-hour shifts. Serve meals, complete camp chores, and participate in group discussions. Engage in daily crew meetings, goal setting, and performance reviews. Teamwork & Conduct Work effectively as part of a team in stressful conditions. Contribute to a safe learning environment; zero tolerance for harassment. Commit to all crew and community activities. Communicate concerns directly to supervisors and colleagues. Represent the Program and AmeriCorps professionally. Physical & Outdoor Skills Maintain adequate hydration, nutrition, and appropriate gear for safety. Live in a demanding, remote environment up to several weeks; possibly 1-12+ hours to nearest medical care. Safety & Judgment Communicate danger or distress clearly over a distance of up to 50 meters. Follow directions and respond to hazards appropriately. Stay alert and focused during travel and work. Recognize and respond to hazards. Self-medicate prescription medications if required. Qualifications U.S. citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident. At least 17 years old. High school diploma or equivalent (or commitment to obtain before award). Complete a National Service Criminal History Check. Willingness to commit fully to the program and its mission. Ability to manage crew life and production within a 40-50 hour work week. Flexible, adaptable, and able to work in a fluid environment. Positive attitude and resilience. Physically fit for long, adverse-condition work. English speaking, understanding, and writing proficiency. No prior experience required; comfort with outdoor living helpful. Time Requirements Typically service commences Tuesday and concludes following Wednesday (9 days); exact schedule may vary. May be required to attend national, state, or local service projects or events. Full seasonal commitment is expected. Orientation and Training Receive AmeriCorps orientation and training on prohibited and unallowable activities. Benefits Segal AmeriCorps Education Award of $1,568.08. Living Allowance: $480 per week. Additional Benefit: $120 per week. Childcare coverage if eligible. Loan forbearance if eligible.Interest payments if eligible. Uniform shirts, helmet, work gloves, eye protection, and other safety equipment provided. Assistance may be available to borrow personal outdoor gear. Positions may fulfill internship requirements (depending on institution). Professional development opportunities (mentorship, resume support, alumni listserv). Exposure to natural resource career paths and opportunities. Evaluation and Reporting Performance is evaluated by completed hours, satisfactory project completion, and meeting criteria communicated at the start of the term. Reporting requirements include bi‑weekly timesheets and accomplishment tracking.
