SENIOR CONSTRUCTION INSPECTOR

Lead field observation and documentation for infrastructure that keeps Colorado’s rural communities strong.

• Location | Colorado Springs, Colorado, with frequent statewide travel

Learn more at Position Summary The Senior Construction Inspector serves as GMS’s experienced on-site representative during construction of municipal water, wastewater, drainage, and roadway infrastructure. Working closely with contractors, municipal clients, and GMS engineers, this position independently observes and documents construction, anticipates field issues, supports timely resolution, and helps guide projects from initial mobilization through final completion. What You Will Do

• Observe and document construction for general conformance with approved plans, specifications, and contract documents.
• Prepare complete, accurate daily reports, photographs, quantity records, testing documentation, and other project records.
• Lead or actively participate in project progress meetings with contractors, clients, and GMS staff.
• Track construction progress and installed quantities; review contractor payment applications and provide quantity documentation to the project engineer.
• Recognize nonconforming work, construction conflicts, and potential schedule or cost impacts and promptly coordinate them with the project engineer.
• Evaluate routine field conditions, recommend practical solutions, and assist the project team in resolving issues while maintaining professional working relationships.
• Coordinate materials testing, review test results for completeness, and confirm that required documentation is maintained.
• Review construction plans, specifications, submittals, requests for information, change documentation, and other project requirements applicable to field activities.
• Coordinate and document substantial-completion inspections, punch lists, final inspections, and project closeout.
• Maintain redlined field drawings documenting observed construction changes for preparation of record drawings.
• Communicate professionally with contractors, municipal staff, property owners, citizens, and GMS team members.
• Provide day-to-day guidance, training, and quality review for less-experienced construction inspectors when assigned.
• Help maintain consistent construction-observation and documentation practices across GMS projects.
• Travel to project sites throughout Colorado and work out of town as project assignments require.

The contractor remains responsible for construction means and methods, sequencing, and jobsite safety. The inspector reports observed issues to the project engineer and does not independently authorize changes to the work. What Will Help You Succeed

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• At least five years of progressively responsible experience in heavy civil, municipal infrastructure, utility, roadway, or related construction inspection.
• Valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record.
• Demonstrated ability to read and interpret construction plans, specifications, contract documents, submittals, and standard construction details.
• Working knowledge of underground utility, earthwork, concrete, roadway, and site-construction practices.
• Ability to independently observe construction, identify potential nonconforming work, and clearly document field conditions without directing the contractor’s means and methods.
• Experience preparing daily reports, photographic records, quantity documentation, punch lists, and redlined field drawings.
• Ability to verify installed quantities and support review of contractor payment applications.
• Strong mathematical, measurement, grade-checking, and quantity-calculation skills.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, electronic file management, and tablet-based field documentation.
• Strong verbal, written, conflict-management, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work independently, prioritize field issues, and maintain regular communication with the project engineer and client.

Preferred Qualifications

• An associate degree in construction management, civil engineering technology, surveying, or a related field; relevant experience may substitute for education.
• Seven or more years of construction inspection or heavy civil construction experience.
• Experience observing municipal water, wastewater, drainage, roadway, and concrete construction.
• Experience coordinating materials testing and reviewing compaction, concrete, asphalt, and other construction test reports.
• Experience with construction administration, payment applications, requests for information, change documentation, and project closeout.
• Surveying, construction layout, or grade-checking experience.
• Relevant inspection, concrete, materials-testing, safety, water, wastewater, or erosion-control certifications.
• Experience training or mentoring construction inspectors.

Travel and Physical Requirements

• Ability and willingness to travel frequently and remain out of town for four to five days per week, depending on project location and schedule.
• Ability to work outdoors in heat, cold, wind, rain, snow, dust, and other conditions typical of active construction sites.
• Ability to stand and walk for extended periods, traverse uneven terrain, climb, bend, and safely work around construction equipment and excavations.
• Ability to wear required personal protective equipment and comply with project-specific safety requirements.

Compensation and Benefits Anticipated compensation: $75,000 to $110,000 The actual offer will depend on the selected candidate’s experience, qualifications, and demonstrated skills.
