Unit Focus • These units are high-acuity, heavily cardiac-focused PCU units. • Travelers should have a strong cardiac background. • EPIC experience is required. Required Competencies • Must be able to independently interpret cardiac rhythms and pass a Dysrhythmia Exam: o No tech assistance permitted. o Must pass on the first attempt (no remediation opportunities). o Exam is paper based, proctored, and requires the use of calipers. o Please review the attached Telemetry Study Guides. **ACLS Patient Ratios & Acuity • Typical nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:4 to 1:5 • Expect: o High patient acuity o Frequent admissions/discharges o Significant procedural volume Common Cardiac Drips Experience with the following drips is required: • Insulin • Milrinone • Dobutamine • Amiodarone • Heparin • Lasix • Nitroglycerin (Nitro) Equipment & Specialty Experience • No ventilator patients • Heart transplant experience preferred (training available if needed) • LVAD experience preferred (training available if needed) • Must have a rating of "4" on all cardiac skills on the skills checklist • Must have chest tube experience Required Experience • Minimum 18 months of recent cardiac unit experience • Must have experience with: o Cardiac drips listed above o Telemetry interpretation o Successfully passing a telemetry exam ALCS Common Patient Populations • Heart Failure • Atrial Fibrillation (A-Fib) • Atrial Flutter • Supraventricular Tachycardia (SVT) • Ventricular Tachycardia (VTach) • Ventricular Fibrillation (VFib) • Fluid Volume Overload (FVO) • Chest Pain • Hypertension (HTN) • Heart Transplant Patients • Congenital Heart Disease • LVAD Patients Common Procedures • Right & Left Heart Catheterizations • TR Band Management • Sheath Removal/Management • Stent Placement • Valve Replacement Procedures • STEMI/NSTEMI Care • Pacemakers • ICDs • Cardioversions • Ablations • Groin Site Management Floating Expectations • Travelers may float to similar cardiac/PCU units as needed. • Travelers will not float to the Cardiac Monitor Tech role. • Only full-time staff nurses are eligible to float into Monitor Tech positions. Please ensure that they are comfortable with the cardiac acuity, telemetry requirements, and procedures listed above before accepting this assignment.
