POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Athletic Trainer works with JV & Varsity teams, coaches & athletes in-season to assist with practice, games and post practice needs. The Athletic Trainer will evaluate and care for injuries and also communicate with parents, athletes and coaches on the progress. The Athletic Trainer will work with coaches about practice needs and time. The Athletic Trainer will also work with the school nurse and TBI team on concussion management protocol throughout the school year. A teacher supervises students within the classroom and other assigned areas while under the general supervision of the school principal. The teacher develops lesson plans; delivers group and individual student instruction within established curriculum guidelines; collaborates with other teachers, professional staff, and administrators in addressing instructional and/or classroom issues. The teacher designs and delivers lessons to promote social, physical, and intellectual growth of the students within the teacher's care. The teacher responds to a wide range of inquiries from students' parents/guardians regarding the instructional program and individual progress.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Eligibility for Virginia teaching licensure, with the appropriate endorsement (Sports Medicine)

2. Possess National Athletic Trainers' Association Certification

3. Possess or be eligible for Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Health Professions License to Practice as an Athletic Trainer

4. Excellent communication and computer skills

5. Aptitude and competence necessary for assigned responsibilities

6. Ability to make independent decisions in accordance with established policies and procedures

7. Satisfactory completion of all onboarding requirements prior to first day of employment, including, but not limited to:

• Documentation of eligibility for employment in the U.S.
• Virginia State Police/FBI criminal history background check
• Virginia Department of Social Services background check
• Tuberculosis test/screening completed within the last 12 months

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

1. Evaluates physical condition and advises and treats interscholastic athletes to maintain maximum physical fitness for participation in athletic competition.

2. Runs ImPact concussion testing program and any other concussion testing programs.

3. Prescribes routine and corrective exercises to strengthen muscles, working along with GHS strength coach.

4. Recommends special diets to build up health and reduce overweight athletes.

5. Renders first aid to injured players, such as giving artificial respiration, cleaning and bandaging wounds, and applying heat and cold to promote healing.

6. Calls physician for injured persons as required.

7. Wraps ankles, fingers, wrists or other injured body parts as needed for proper care.

8. Treats chronic minor injuries and related disabilities to maintain athletes' performance.

9. Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.

10. Maintains accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulations.

11. Strives to maintain and improve professional competence.

12. Makes provisions for being available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day when required or requested to do so under reasonable terms.

13. Manages concussion paperwork and works with the school nurse, teachers and coaches on the return to activity protocol.

14. Communicates with parents and coaches on injuries and progress.

15. Works with concussion management team on reviewing protocols and instructing coaches each pre-season on required concussion procedures.

16. Tracks and maintains physicals for all athletes.

17. Assists Activities Director when needed.

18. Attends all practices and home game of in-season sports, unless indicated by the Activities Director.

19. Travels with Varsity Football to all away games.

20. Covers home tournaments and home region post-season play.

21. Acts in a courteous and respectful manner, using good judgment and appropriate communication skills at all times.

22. Maintains a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality regarding students, parents, and other staff members.

23. Models non-discriminatory behavior in all activities.

24. Performs related work as required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Average amount of climbing, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, and other repetitive motions.
