Interim Controller
New Haven, CT (Hybrid)
Temporary/Fractional Engagement
$70-96/hour

Hybrid schedule: 3 days onsite per week

Kelly is seeking an Interim Controller to support our client, a growing biotech organization in New Haven, CT, on a temporary basis. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced accounting professional who enjoys helping small or growing companies strengthen their financial operations, improve processes, and provide strategic financial guidance during a period of growth.
Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer (based in China), the Fractional Controller will oversee the company's day-to-day accounting and financial operations while providing leadership for budgeting, forecasting, financial reporting, and internal controls. This role manages one Accountant and works closely with both U.S. and international leadership.

Responsibilities

• Oversee the company's day-to-day accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, cash management, and month-end close
• Supervise and mentor one Accountant while serving as the primary financial leader for the U.S. operation
• Prepare accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP
• Develop budgets, forecasts, financial models, and cash flow projections to support business planning
• Analyze financial performance and provide recommendations to leadership regarding trends, risks, and opportunities
• Establish and improve accounting processes, financial controls, and reporting procedures to support a growing organization
• Coordinate with external accounting, payroll, tax, audit, and banking partners
• Support annual audits and financial reporting requirements
• Oversee administration of the company's 401(k) plan and ensure related compliance activities are completed
• Partner with executive leadership to provide actionable financial insights and support strategic decision-making
• Identify opportunities to improve operational efficiency and strengthen financial processes

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
• 7+ years of progressive accounting and finance experience, including experience in a Controller or Accounting Manager capacity
• Experience working in a startup, small company, or high-growth environment strongly preferred (approximately $25M in annual revenue)
• Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP and financial reporting
• Experience leading month-end close, budgeting, forecasting, cash flow management, and financial analysis
• Previous supervisory experience preferred
• QuickBooks experience strongly preferred
• Biotech, life sciences, healthcare, or related industry experience is a plus
• Strong communication skills with the ability to collaborate across domestic and international teams
• Self-directed, hands-on professional who is comfortable balancing strategic financial leadership with day-to-day accounting responsibilities
