Position Overview
The Director of Donor Engagement and Events will provide strategic leadership for the NYIC's individual donor program, major donor strategy, and fundraising events portfolio, including the NYIC's annual gala. Reporting to the Vice President of Strategic Partnerships, the Director will set the vision and direction for a comprehensive events and donor engagement program, cultivate and steward a portfolio of major individual donors, and build the systems and strategies needed to meet ambitious fundraising goals.
The Director will serve as a key partner to NYIC's senior leadership and board, bringing both a data-informed and relationship-centered approach to donor cultivation and solicitation. In addition to managing a robust calendar of 5-10 annual fundraising events (from intimate donor cultivation gatherings to large-scale galas) the Director will oversee donor communications, community fundraisers, and the individual/grassroots giving program operates to grow in impact and reach each year.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Provide strategic direction and execute a calendar of 5-10 annual fundraising, cultivation, and stewardship events, identifying needed adjustments within the area of responsibility and prioritizing initiatives aligned with organizational goals
- Execute ten 40th Anniversary Events and Fundraising Strategy for major and grassroots donors, including acquisition, cultivation, and stewardship phases.
- Serve as Creative Director of the NYIC's "This is Our NY" gala.
- Design and lead a comprehensive cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategy for donors and prospects; set challenging portfolio goals to diversify organizational revenue.
- Maintain and actively manage a grassroots donor portfolio and provide strategic direction and support to the Director of Development, Vice President of Strategic Partnerships, and President and CEO in managing their respective portfolios.
- Oversee the production and strategic messaging of donor-facing materials (including annual appeals, the NYIC annual report, and project-specific on-pagers) ensuring alignment with organizational narrative and goals.
- Develop donor communications (including online donation pages, event pages, auto-receipts, and web copy) maintaining timeliness, brand consistency, and donor-centric messaging.
- Build, refine, and institutionalize data management systems and fundraising infrastructure that support organizational growth and scalability; help team members understand how their work connects to NYIC's strategic mission.
- Supervise and train associates, interns, and Vista volunteers hired to support individual giving efforts as necessary.
- Lead individual giving and events strategy for NYIC Action (c4), including donor engagement, events, and project management.
- Support broader Development team priorities as needed, modeling adaptive leadership and a willingness to drive change in policies, structures, and methods when organizational needs demand it.
- May occasionally carry or move materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
Qualities Sought
- 6-8+ years of relevant professional experience in development/ fundraising in the non-profit sector
- Experience developing and executing donor engagement strategies that increase donor retention, acquisition, and philanthropic investment.
- Proven ability to set strategic direction and translate organizational goals into actionable fundraising plans
- Sound judgement in ambiguous or fast-moving situations; comfortable making decisions with incomplete information
- Demonstrated success managing a major gift portfolio and executing full lifecycle of donor engagement strategies
- Experience planning and executing fundraising events, from intimate cultivation gatherings to large-scale galas
- Strong ability to cultivate, solicit, and steward donors at the major gift level
- Skilled at influencing and persuading diverse stakeholders (including board members, executive leadership, and donors) through data, relationship-building, and compelling narrative
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to craft donor-facing materials that are on-brand and mission-aligned
- Demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion in leadership practice
- Ability to work across and celebrate differences in culture, norms, and lived experience
- Experience working with or within immigrant, BIPOC, or other historically marginalized communities
- Proficiency with Salesforce (or comparable CRM), MailChimp, and online giving platforms such as ActBlue
- Experience supervising and developing staff, with a coaching and solutions-oriented approach
- Passion for immigrant rights and social justice
- Must be legally authorized to work for any employer in the U.S.
Annual Salary: $95,481.00
