Position Overview The Electrical Supervisor is responsible for planning, coordinating, and supervising electrical work activities to ensure projects are completed safely, on schedule, and in compliance with applicable codes and standards. This advanced-level position exercises independent judgment and serves as a technical authority to ensure regulatory compliance for mission‑critical infrastructure in an occupied university environment. Key Responsibilities Serve as the university’s technical authority for complex electrical, electronic, and life‑safety systems. Provide expert guidance and final technical decisions for Facilities Operations. Oversee advanced work involving power distribution, emergency power, DDC systems, fire alarm and life‑safety systems, security systems, and fiber‑optic infrastructure. Diagnose and resolve highly complex system failures affecting academic, research, residential, and mission‑critical facilities. Act as the primary compliance lead for fire alarm and life‑safety systems. Ensure compliance with the North Carolina Fire Code, NFPA 72, NEC (NFPA 70), OSHA, and university policies. Direct NFPA 72 inspection, testing, maintenance, impairments, documentation, and acceptance testing. Coordinate directly with Environmental Health & Safety, Campus Police, and the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ). Establish and enforce advanced safety practices, including lockout/tagout, arc‑flash mitigation, energized‑work controls, and life‑safety system impairment procedures. Lead campus response to electrical and life‑safety emergencies, outages, and system restorations. Plan, assign, and supervise licensed electricians, apprentices, and contractors. Provide advanced technical mentoring, training, and performance evaluation. Oversee and approve contractor work for electrical, fire alarm, DDC, and fiber‑optic projects. Review test results, documentation, and as‑built drawings prior to system acceptance. Direct preventive maintenance programs for electrical and life‑safety systems. Lead long‑range planning for system upgrades, modernization, and energy‑efficiency initiatives. Coordinate planned outages to minimize disruption to campus operations. Maintain authoritative records for inspections, testing, deficiencies, impairments, corrective actions, and system history. Utilize the CMMS to ensure traceability and compliance. Required Qualifications Seven (7) or more years of progressively responsible electrical trade experience. Three (3) or more years of supervisory or lead electrician experience. Advanced knowledge of complex electrical, electronic, and low‑voltage systems in institutional environments. Advanced knowledge of fire alarm and life‑safety systems under the North Carolina Fire Code and NFPA 72. Working knowledge of DDC / building automation systems and system integration. Knowledge of fiber‑optic systems, termination methods, and testing principles. Knowledge of NEC (NFPA 70), NFPA 72, OSHA regulations, and university safety policies. Advanced troubleshooting of multi‑system electrical and life‑safety failures. Supervising skilled trades staff and coordinating contractor activities. Interpreting complex drawings, schematics, riser diagrams, and as‑built documentation. Applying lockout/tagout, arc‑flash mitigation, and life‑safety testing protocols. Maintaining detailed compliance documentation and CMMS records. Exercise independent judgment in resolving complex technical and safety issues. Ensure continuous compliance with NFPA 72 inspection, testing, and maintenance requirements. Lead emergency response and restoration for critical campus systems. Communicate technical and regulatory information clearly to staff, contractors, inspectors, and campus stakeholders. Coordinate effectively with the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ).
