The City of Cedar Park is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Planning Technician . The successful candidate will provide essential support to property owners and the development community by helping them navigate property information, code requirements, and land use and development applications throughout the review and approval process.

The Position
Under general supervision, the Planning Technician assists the Development Services Department with a variety of technical and administrative duties including serving as staff liaison for our stakeholders and Department's board and commission, providing resource and technical support on development applications, researching and assembling data and reports, tracking projects, and maintaining records.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Serves as the primary point of contact for the Planning Division, providing high-quality customer service to all internal and external customers by phone, email, and in-person on all land development regulations and policies, application processes and requirements, and application status.
  • Responds to requests for information from the public and other city staff including public information requests, problem-solving, identifying their needs and directing them to other sources for information when necessary.
  • Reviews site development and subdivision applications for compliance with the City's addressing regulations, including street names, subdivision names and legal descriptions.
  • Reviews applications for residential and stand-alone building permits and certificate of occupancies for compliance with the City's zoning and site development ordinances.
  • Performs field inspections as necessary to ensure project compliance with approved plans.
  • Serves as staff liaison for official Board or Commission meetings associated with the Department; duties include preparing and posting all agendas and packets according to the Open Meetings Act, coordinating the collating and distribution of informational material packets, preparing and recording minutes.
  • Coordinates with Case Manager to ensure all required notifications for cases are mailed and posted in accordance with State and Local Codes.
  • Coordinates, schedules, and distributes informational material for weekly meetings such as Development Services Committee and Pre-Development meetings.
  • Prepares zoning verification letters and supporting documentation as required.
  • Researches, compiles, and analyzes information from sources such as maps, departmental data, other jurisdictions, county clerk and other government records, to be utilized for special projects and various reports, presentations, and ordinancesConducts comparative surveys and benchmarking using peer city data and prepares summaries to support decision-making.
  • Creates submittal schedules for zoning, subdivision, and site development permits;
  • Performs such other related duties as may be required.

Acceptable Experience, Training, Certifications and Licenses


Associate degree and two (2) years of related experience; or
Bachelor's degree in Urban Planning, Architecture, Geography, or related field. (preferred).

Must possess a valid Texas Driver's License, with acceptable driving record.

Supplemental Information
Knowledge of:
City development ordinances;
Data collection methods and techniques;
Planning and zoning terminology and basic practices;
City government organization, functions, policies and procedures.


Skill/Ability to:
Provide exceptional Customer Service
Demonstrate proficiency in both oral and written communication;
Operate computer using standard word processing, spreadsheet and database software, graphic and desktop publishing, presentation software;
Organize facts and present them in a clearly written or graphic form; interpret maps;
Prepare plans and drawings neatly and accurately;
interpret and develop ordinances and resolutions; and
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, the public, developers, consultants and outside agencies.
