Agency NC State Highway Patrol Division NC State Highway Patrol Job Classification Title Accountant I (S) Position Number 65042956 Grade NC13 About Us The North Carolina State Highway Patrol's primary mission is to reduce collisions and make the highways of North Carolina as safe as possible. The NCSHP has more than 1,600 troopers who cover nearly 80,000 miles of North Carolina roadways, more than any other state except Texas. In addition to enforcing the state's traffic laws, state troopers also guide traffic during hurricane evacuations, re-route traffic around hazardous chemical spills, and they stand ready should any act of terrorism occur. Description of Work The NC State Highway Patrol (NCSHP) is seeking a well-rounded, focused-driven individual to join our HR Team as an Accountant I. The Accountant I position plays a vital role in the day-to-day operations of the NCSHP Fiscal Section, responsible for maintaining, examining, and analyzing financial records to ensure accuracy and compliance with state and federal regulations. Salisbury Street Raleigh, NC 27610 Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to: Provide assistance and coding for appropriate accounts and funding sources (cost centers). Assist with preparing year-end financial statements for the Office of the State Auditor. Monitor and assist with budgets, grants, and asset forfeiture funds. Review general ledger entries to see if corrections are needed. P-Card support and reconciliation. Provide customer service to vendors regarding payments. Assist with vendor set-up. Assist with AR customer set-up and collections Preparation and analysis of ad hoc reports. Applicants who possess the following are preferred: Working knowledge of accounting methods, procedures, and practices. Demonstrated experience with the North Carolina Financial System (NCFS). Knowledge of General Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and/or knowledge of accounting methods, procedures or financial practices used by NC State agencies. Ability to analyze and correct financial problems and accounting errors, perform bank and subsidiary reconciliations, and post GL entries accurately and timely. Ability to use a variety of technology, financial systems, and software packages to prepare interpretive or analytical accounting and/or financial reports. Ability to work, prioritize and problem solve independently. Ability to have effective oral and written communication. Ability to work with complex spreadsheets. Ability to examine accounting records to assure adherence to accounting standards and regulations. Bachelor’s degree in accounting, or a degree in business administration, finance or public administration or a related discipline from an appropriately accredited institution with 18 semester hours of accounting; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
