Firefighter/EMT - Paramedic (Firefighter/Emergency Medical Technician - Paramedic)

The FY27 Proposed Budget includes an increase to the pay range: $71,225 - $133,766 (Bill 32-26) Nature and Variety of Work Provide emergency medical services to the highest level of certification; operate advanced life support or basic life support medical unit and/or other emergency firefighting and rescue equipment; participate in drills and training exercises; and perform fire prevention inspections, public education safety presentations, and fire suppression activities. This full‑time, permanent, safety‑sensitive position is in the Fire Department and may require shift work. Saturday, July 18th OR Sunday, July 19th – Written Exam and Oral Assessment (no virtual/online options this year). Late August or Early September 2026 – Candidate Physical Ability Test and Background Overview (only a limited number of candidates will be invited to this step of the process). Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) Orientation. Final CPAT (Test) will be administered. Medical Evaluations. January/February 2027 and July/August 2027 – Academy start dates. All candidates MUST ATTEND the written examination and oral assessment on the assigned dates to be considered for entry‑level EMT/FIREFIGHTER. The exact dates and times will be sent via email invite. Test Administration Details Two components: a written examination and a structured oral process (SOP) – a video‑based oral assessment. These two components will be given in one day, Saturday or Sunday, over the weekend (July 18th–19th). Candidates will be invited to either Saturday or Sunday and will take the written test and oral assessment back‑to‑back on the same day. Testing may last from two (2) to seven (7) hours, with an anticipated average of three and a half (3.5) hours. Candidate Test Orientation Guide: No electronic devices, including smartwatches and smart glasses, or physical media will be allowed at the testing location; candidates are encouraged to bring food and drinks in a small cooler or bag. A valid picture ID must be presented at the time of the written exam – without it the exam cannot be taken. Minimum Qualifications 1. Graduation from high school and/or GED; certification at hire as a nationally registered paramedic; licensed as a paramedic by the Maryland State EMS Board; a valid commercial Class B motor vehicle operator’s license; must be at least 18 years of age prior to the start date of the academy (January/February 2026). NOTE: The position requires candidates to be licensed as a paramedic by the Maryland State EMS Board. Candidates must be active in the National Paramedic Registry and obtain the Maryland license within six (6) months of hire. NOTE: All candidates must have a valid non‑commercial Class C motor vehicle operator’s license to apply. A non‑commercial Class B license, or equivalent, will be issued upon graduation from the Anne Arundel County Fire Training Academy program. NOTE: This is a combination Fire Department. Paramedics are required to be trained and certified as firefighters. NOTE: This is an entry‑level position; no prior fire service related experience is required. Graduation from high school; successful completion of the Anne Arundel County Fire Training Academy program; one year as a Firefighter II in the classified service of the county fire department; certification as a nationally registered paramedic and licensed as a paramedic by the Maryland State EMS Board; and a valid non‑commercial Class B motor vehicle operator’s license. 1. Written Examination and Oral Assessment are scheduled in person on Saturday, July 18, 2026, or Sunday, July 19, 2026 at Severna Park High School (60 Robinson Rd, Severna Park, MD 21146). A valid picture ID must be presented at the time of the written exam.
2. CPAT and background overview and orientations. A limited number of candidates will be invited to move forward based on written examination/oral assessment results.
3. CPAT testing window: 8‑week period to pass the Candidate Physical Ability Test. Reciprocity may be granted for recent passes with another jurisdiction.
4. Final CPAT.
5. Background investigation: overlapping with the CPAT window. Disqualification may result from poor work history, driving record, felony conviction, falsification, failure to meet physical standards, inability to complete selection components, or other criteria.
6. Medical examination: conditional offers require a NFPA 1582 medical examination and a CDS test before consideration for the Fire Training Academy.

Volunteer Preference Volunteer members of the Anne Arundel County Fire Service who have actively served the two (2) years prior to application, have passed the MFRI basic firefighting course, are Certified Emergency Medical Technicians, and have competitively completed all selection procedure components are awarded preference for inclusion on the eligibility list. Veteran Preference Eligible veteran means a veteran of any branch of the U.S. Armed Forces who has received an honorable discharge or certificate of satisfactory completion of military service, including National Guard, Coast Guard, and Military Reserves. An eligible veteran is not employed by the County at the time of application. An eligible veteran applying for the position of Firefighter II who successfully completes all components and lawful requirements will receive hiring preference. This preference does not displace any volunteer firefighter preference. Benefits Twenty‑six (26) annual leave days and fifteen (15) paid sick days yearly. Recruit Class The starting date for Recruit Class 68 is expected to be January/February 2027, and Recruit Class 69 is expected to be July/August 2027.
