Behavioral Health Unit Supervisor (40 Hour)

Position Overview The State of Connecticut, Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS) is seeking a qualified and experienced individual for the position of Behavioral Health Unit Supervisor at Whiting Forensic Hospital. This leadership role oversees a multidisciplinary team to deliver high‑quality, compassionate services. This position is only open to current DMHAS employees. Position Highlights Facility: Whiting Forensic Hospital Unit: Dutcher 1 North Location: Middletown, CT Schedule: Full‑time (40 hrs), First Shift, Monday‑Friday 8:00 am‑4:30 pm Hazardous Duty Responsibilities Schedule, assign, and oversee the work of a multi‑shift unit, including direct supervision of all shifts. Participate in the development of unit goals and objectives. Develop and maintain unit procedures and policies, ensuring compliance. Assist in recruitment, selection, training, and development of staff. Develop competency‑based job descriptions for unit staff. Ensure unit staff receive appropriate training. Conduct performance appraisals, determine priorities, and plan, coordinate, and supervise unit activities. Ensure cross‑shift communication among staff. Develop relationships with and act as liaison to other operating units, agencies, and outside officials. Participate as a member of an interdisciplinary team to develop, evaluate, and monitor programs. Coordinate interdisciplinary team meetings. Collaborate and direct any necessary alternate treatment. Monitor and track client care to ensure quality, effectiveness, and timeliness of patient care and requisite treatment hours. Facilitate bilingual interpretation as needed. Identify barriers and assist in developing strategies and solutions for improving client care. Prepare reports. Possibly perform clinical direct care duties and write client treatment plans. Perform related duties as required. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Considerable knowledge of agency policies and procedures, behavioral health treatment principles, psychiatric rehabilitation, addiction detox rehabilitation, entitlement and benefit programs, and a variety of intervention and support strategies. Knowledge of and ability to apply principles of risk management, relevant state and federal laws, statutes and regulations, societal, cultural, and gender issues impacting mental illness, and psychotropic medications. Considerable interpersonal skills, oral and written communication skills, facilitation, collaboration, and conflict resolution skills. Ability to identify and articulate philosophical foundations for specific program models or service approaches. Ability to delegate authority, plan and organize effectively, integrate community resources into service delivery planning, develop and maintain effective relationships with community representatives and staff. Supervisory ability. Minimum Qualifications Seven (7) years of professional health‑care experience in a behavioral health setting. At least two (2) of those years must have been at a lead or supervisory level responsible for coordinating the work of a unit or team of professionals in a behavioral health setting. College training may substitute for general experience: fifteen (15) semester hours equals one‑half (½) year of experience, up to a maximum of four (4) years for a Bachelor’s degree. A Master’s degree in a health‑care field related to one of the disciplines in the special experience may substitute for one (1) additional year of general experience. Preferred Qualifications Experience in an inpatient or hospital setting. Experience supervising staff members from multiple disciplines. Experience working with severe and persistent mental illness populations. Experience coordinating clinical services. Experience with development and implementation of policies and practices. Experience working with forensic populations. Special Requirements Must possess a current license as a Clinical Social Worker, Professional Counselor, Marital and Family Therapist, Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor, or a Registered Nurse in the State of Connecticut (or a Multistate or Compact Registered Nurse license). MAY be required to possess certification as a clinical supervisor by the Connecticut Certification Board. MAY be required to be bilingual or fluent in American Sign Language. MAY be required to travel. Working Conditions Incumbents in this class may be required to lift and restrain clients, may have significant exposure to communicable and/or infectious diseases, risk of injury, and may be exposed to strongly disagreeable conditions.
