About the Organization Desert Recreation District (DRD) covers over 1,800 square miles, providing recreational services to more than 380,000 residents throughout the Greater Coachella Valley. DRD works with municipalities to assure equitable service delivery to every community regardless of economic means. The district boundary has expanded in recent years to provide barrier‑free, safe service to more unincorporated areas of the Coachella Valley and municipalities not previously served. DRD is responsible for over 30 recreational facilities including community and fitness centers, sports fields, swimming pools, a golf course and driving range, and various parks and open spaces. Position Summary Under general supervision, performs a variety of duties in support of the District’s youth recreational gymnastics program; plans and conducts gymnastics lessons, classes, and instruction based on participant abilities; provides demonstration, spotting, and skill development; ensures proper form and the safety of participants; provides staff support for special events; and performs related work as required. Supervision Receives general supervision from the Gymnastics Program Specialist. Exercises no direct supervision over staff. Class Characteristics This journey level classification is responsible for independently performing recreational gymnastic instruction including class planning and delivery, ensuring a safe environment and appropriate skills for participants. Positions at this level exercise judgment and initiative in their assigned tasks, receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise, and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit. Typical Job Functions Plans and conducts youth recreational gymnastics lessons, classes, and instruction; prepares and delivers age‑appropriate and skill‑focused lessons based on participants’ abilities. Provides technical guidance to participants by demonstrating gymnastics skills, methods, and techniques, ensuring proper form and safety. Provides gymnastics safety and supervision for participants during instruction sessions; maintains class control; monitors activities to avoid and prevent accidents and ensure safety and well‑being. Works collaboratively with students and parents to ensure strong and productive relationships and a positive learning environment. Receives and responds to questions, concerns, and complaints from parents; determines issues and resolves or refers to supervisor as appropriate. Maintains records of participation; prints rosters and completes required documentation. Inspects and maintains gymnastics apparatuses and equipment for safety and functionality; ensures proper placement and availability; identifies maintenance needs and reports to supervisor. Provides staff support and assists with planning special events. Attends trainings, workshops, and classes related to job duties. Observes and complies with all District and mandated safety rules, regulations, and protocols. Performs other duties as assigned. Licenses and Certifications Valid certifications in First Aid, CPR, and AED for adult, child, and infant, to be maintained throughout employment. Knowledge of Basic principles and techniques of recreational gymnastics instruction. Methods and techniques of assessing students’ gymnastics capabilities. USA Gymnastics skills and methods, and spotting techniques. Functionality and proper use of gymnastics apparatuses and equipment. Age and skill‑appropriate training goals and objectives for a diverse range of students. Principles and practices of lesson development and planning. Organization and operation of a gymnasium. Applicable federal, state, and local laws, regulatory codes, ordinances, and procedures relevant to assigned areas of responsibility. District and mandated safety rules, regulations, and protocols, including basic first aid and adult and/or child CPR methods. Basic principles and procedures of record keeping. Techniques for providing a high level of customer service by effectively dealing with the public, vendors, contractors, and District staff. The structure and content of the English language to effectively perform the work. Modern equipment and communication tools used for business functions and program, project, and task coordination, including computers and software programs relevant to work performed. Ability to Modify and conduct gymnastics lessons based on students’ age and skill set. Attentively observe and monitor the safety of students. Work with children in a recreational setting. Clean and care for assigned areas and equipment. Demonstrate gymnastics skills and methods safely and with proper form. Safely use and operate a variety of gymnastics apparatuses and equipment. Maintain discipline, order, and safety in a crowded and noisy environment. Provide courteous assistance to participants, parents, and the public. Maintain accurate logs, records, and basic written records of work performed. Organize work, set priorities, and meet critical deadlines. Understand, interpret, and apply all applicable laws, codes, regulations, policies and procedures, and standards relevant to work performed. Observe and comply with District and mandated safety rules, regulations, and protocols. Use tact, initiative, prudence, and independent judgment within general policy, procedural, and legal guidelines. Effectively use computer systems, software applications, and modern business equipment to perform a variety of work tasks. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing, using appropriate English grammar and syntax. Establish, maintain, and foster positive and effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Physical Demands Work is performed primarily within a gymnasium environment. Stamina is needed to stand for extended periods and perform moderate to heavy lifting of equipment or children when spotting. Mobility to stand, stoop, kneel, reach, bend, climb, push and pull materials and equipment is required. Vision and hearing must allow identification and monitoring of children in crowded and noisy conditions. Ability to lift 50 pounds or heavier weights with proper equipment or assistance is required. Work Environment Employees work in a gymnasium and office environment with moderate noise levels, controlled temperature conditions, and no direct exposure to hazardous substances. Interaction with upset staff and/or public and private representatives may occur while enforcing policies and procedures.
