Terms Of Employment: 10 or 12 Months

Qualifications:

• Graduation from high school or equivalency
• General knowledge and experience of building cleaning practices, supplies, and equipment and the ability to use them economically and efficiently
• Valid North Carolina Driver's License

1. Performs responsible unskilled work in the care and cleaning of school facilities
2. Performs a variety of general and light groundskeeping work in the care and maintenance of assigned buildings and facilities
3. Sweeps, mops, vacuums, strips, waxes, and buffs floor surfaces
4. Cleans and disinfects restroom areas and replenishes paper supplies and soap as necessary
5. Cleans windows, walls, woodwork, blinds, heating/air vents, and light fixtures
6. Dusts and cleans desks and other furniture
7. Empties trash receptacles; gathers and disposes of refuse in on-site dumpsters
8. Sweeps sidewalks and walkways outside of buildings; polices grounds; picks up debris; applies de-icing compounds to walkways as necessary
9. Cleans and sanitizes waste baskets
10. Cleans and sanitizes water fountains
11. Raises and lowers flags as needed
12. Maintains inventory; requisitions; and picks up cleaning supplies as needed
13. Opens buildings at start of workday; securely locks down facility at end of each day
14. Washes windows on both the inside and the outside
15. Arranges furniture, tables, and chairs for meetings and other events
16. Mows and trims grass on campus grounds
17. Trims shrubbery, trees, etc.
18. Rakes and removes leaves as necessary
19. Makes minor building repairs, as able
20. Reports major repairs needed and any damage to school property to the principal
21. Responds to after-hours emergencies and works overtime as needed
22. Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor of the Maintenance Department

Physical And Cognitive Requirements

The major physical and cognitive requirements listed below are applicable to the Custodian job classification within Bertie County Schools.

Work in this classification is considered medium physical work requiring the exertion of up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Must be able to:

• Walk, lift, reach, stoop, stand, grasp, balance, climb, kneel, and crouch
• Work in various inside and outside environments being subjected to weather changes, noise, vibrations, job hazards and atmospheric conditions
• Use visual acuity required for depth perception and color perception
• Visually inspect small defects and/or small parts
• Use a variety of measuring devices
• Assemble or fabricate parts at or within arm's length
• Operate machinery and equipment including hand tools and job-specific equipment and tools, etc.
• Must be physically able to operate a motor vehicle
• Determine the accuracy and thoroughness of work
• Observe general surroundings and activities
• Hear sufficiently to accurately perceive information at normally spoken work levels
• Use communication by means of spoken word to express or exchange ideas
• Safely work in situations of exposure to bloodborne pathogens, which may require specialized personal protective equipment
