Come drink some coffee with us! About This Role This role sits at the intersection of AI, robotics, consumer hardware, IoT, and specialty coffee. You’ll work hands-on across the stack to build machines that operate reliably in the real world while delivering an exceptional coffee experience at scale. The ideal candidate has shipped real embedded products, seen them fail in the field, debugged them under pressure, and improved the platform as a result. What We're Looking For 5+ years of production embedded firmware experience in C on resource-constrained 32-bit MCUs; STM32 or ESP32 experience is a plus. Shipped at least one product that operated in the field long enough to encounter and resolve real reliability problems. Strong low-level MCU knowledge, including registers, memory layout, startup code, linker scripts, interrupts, fault handling, and core dumps. Production RTOS experience, including threads, ISR-to-thread handoff, message passing, and stack/RAM management. Experience with distributed multi-MCU systems over wired buses such as RS-485 or CAN, including arbitration, timeouts, retries, degraded operation, and cross-board debugging. Comfortable working from schematics and datasheets to develop drivers and map hardware functions onto timers, PWM, capture/compare, quadrature decoding, DMA, SPI, I²C, UART, and ADCs. Hands-on debugging with oscilloscopes and logic analyzers, tracing behavior from firmware and MCU pins through sensors and actuators. Able to contribute to hardware design reviews by identifying pin-mux conflicts, testability issues, missing test points, and component-selection concerns. Experience controlling physical systems such as heaters, pumps, motors, encoders, or current-feedback loops, tuned and verified on real hardware. Designs firmware for testability through clear hardware abstractions, host-runnable tests, and mocked peripherals. Strong ownership, comfort with ambiguity, and a record of driving difficult problems through root cause and resolution. Uses AI-assisted development tools, such as Claude Code, within a disciplined, hardware-verified workflow. What Makes You a Strong Fit Multi-board bring-up of a new product, including schematic review, first power-on, sensor characterization, and EVT/DVT/PVT; PCB layout experience in Altium or KiCad is a plus. Production experience with Zephyr, including Kconfig, devicetree, overlays, and west. Secure bootloader and firmware-update experience, including image signing, A/B slots, rollback, and OTA orchestration. Experience with thermal, fluidic, or motion-control products such as appliances, espresso machines, HVAC systems, 3D printers, lab automation, or robotics. Experience with mains-AC systems, safety interlocks, watchdogs, current sensing, isolation, and UL, ETL, or IEC 60335 requirements. Firmware storage and communications experience, including LittleFS, FCB/NVS, calibration persistence, framing, CRCs, versioned schemas, or protobuf/nanopb. Experience with embedded signal processing, hierarchical state machines, or crash-dump postmortems using fault registers, stack traces, and field logs. The salary range for this role is $ 150,000-$200,000 , with final compensation determined based on factors such as relevant experience, skills and qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related considerations.
