ED Technician - Per Diem

Emergency Department Technician

The Emergency Department Technician delivers patient care under the general direction and supervision of the RNs within the Emergency Department. He/She provides patient care by performing the listed duties within context of their job description and established procedures and standards of care in the Emergency Department. The Emergency Technician will adhere to Mid Valley Hospital policies and procedures and Washington state licensing laws.

Professional Requirements

  • Demonstrates the mission, ethics, and goals of the organization as well as the departmental Scope of Service.
  • Communication with patients, guests, family, and staff is courteous, respectful, and helpful.
  • Maintains a clean, safe, and accident-free environment.
  • Follows Infection Control procedures at all times.

Clinical Personnel: Strictly adheres to standard precautions by adhering to the usage of personal protective equipment when handling blood or body fluids.

Non-Clinical Personnel: Washes hands and other skin surfaces with soap and water thoroughly and often in an effort to control spreading of germs within the department and facility.

Adheres to isolation procedures at all times as applicable.

Adheres to the following environmental care standards.

  • Demonstrates adequate knowledge of safety policies and procedures, the use of MSDS sheets, hazardous material procedures, and safety codes.
  • Respond appropriately to any Codes while working any shift (Code Blue, Code Gray, Code Silver, Code Amber, Code Red, Code Orange, and Rapid Response Team).
  • Demonstrates adequate knowledge of security issues, i.e., personal protection, protection of personal and hospital property.

Participates in quality initiatives as needed.

Be familiar with and comply with the Mid-Valley Hospital & Clinic Personnel Handbook and Policies.

  • Be familiar with the collective bargaining agreement (Union Contract) of the UFCW3000 and Mid-Valley Hospital.

Essential Job Functions

  1. Obtains work assignment from RN at the beginning of shift and coordinates patient with her team leader throughout the shift. Notifies team leader of change in patient condition.
  2. Handles all requests with a positive attitude at the time the request is made. Cooperates with team members in a constructive and supportive manner. Demonstrates ethical conduct and practices in carrying out delegated duties within scope of practice.
  3. Has strong knowledge base of scope of practice, demonstrates ability to function within the scope of practice.
  4. Understands principles of asepsis.
  5. Assists in care for all types of patients, i.e., neonatal, pediatric, psychiatric, geriatric, orthopedic, medical, surgical, detox, and cardiac.
  6. Provides orthopedic support goods or crutches fitting, splitting and gait training.
  7. Takes accurate vital signs of patients, including repeat temperatures after Tylenol administration and orthostatic pre and post fluid administration. Reports all abnormal findings to RN immediately. Documents vitals in EDM.
  8. Transports patients into and out of the Emergency Department. To and from Radiology. Transports patients to the general units when admitted.
  9. Obtain medical samples from patients, such as blood, urine or other laboratory specimens. Also assists in collection of stool, clean catch and Pedi-bag urine specimens, sputum specimens, Guaiac's stool specimens and dips UAs per protocol. Must keep competencies up to date.
  10. Cleans, scrubs and sanitizes instruments as directed and returns them to CS to be autoclaved.
  11. Takes specimens to laboratory.
    • Restocks linens and standard supply items in all rooms.
    • Replenishes blanket warmer and IVF's and rotating them to avoid outdating per protocol, check.
    • Checks levels of soft restraints, cleans gurneys thoroughly on a weekly basis.
    • Replenishes suction canisters and O2 set ups after each patient.
    • Checks refrigerator temp and documents in manual.
    • Calibrates ACCU-Check machine.
  12. Checks Oxygen tanks.
  13. Maintains supply of wheelchairs in ED.
  14. Completes CNA check list.
  15. Assists in set up of simple procedures, such as simple pelvic, suturing, holding for blood draws and holding for LP testing.
  16. Responsible for clothing check list, starting pre-op checklist, gowning patient for radiological procedures and for OR procedures.
  17. Runs errands; i.e. patient belongings to floor, charts to acute care etc.
  18. Prepares patient room's pre and post discharge. Wipes down carts with disinfectant and places clean linen on carts.
  19. Maintains ongoing communication between nursing and medical staff about their patient observations and voices complaints and needs of patients.
  20. Makes half hourly rounds on patients, repeating vital signs, fielding requests for patient comfort and updates on completion of care relating their objective observations to the RN managing the care of the patient.
  21. Performs simple dressings under supervision and direction of RN using clean technique. No Sterile Dressing changes or procedures per WAC codes.
  22. Assists patients with dressing and un-dressing. Setting patients for abdominal x-rays in an upright position.
  23. Assists patients with toileting, hygiene, skin care.
  24. Stays with confused patients and children, as needed and directed by the RN.
  25. Weighs patients as directed by RN caring for patient. All children should receive their weight in kg.
  26. Assists with patients needing to be restrained per hospital policy.
  27. Work aids may be, but not all inclusive: scissors, stethoscope, scales, carts, wheelchairs, traction bar.
  28. Follows normal chain of command.
  29. Refrains from gathering triage information of patients other than stated chief complaint
  30. Identifies self as the Emergency Room Technician with encounters of all patients.
  31. Appropriately completes ADT's as directed by the RN and turns them in to admitting personnel when complete.
  32. Prepares patients for transfer as well as copying records for the receiving facility.
  33. Admits patients to the central monitor when the PT has Cardiac monitoring ordered or frequent vital sign to be obtained.
  34. Maintains Current BLS, Current licensure.
  35. Assists patients with ambulation as needed, getting out of bed, transferring to commode, wheelchair or stretcher.

Requirements

Minimum Education:

High School Diploma or GED

CNA Training

Required Licensure / Certifications:

The EMT, or CNA is currently registered with Washington State and renews his/her license prior to his/her birthday every year. (Will transition to ED tech upon completion of the Phlebotomy training)

Obtain Phlebotomy certification (Mid-Valley provides training)

Preferred Qualifications:

1-3 years in Emergency Room setting.
