INVESTIGATOR-CONSUMER PROTECTION DIVISION The Office of Attorney General Tim Griffin is seeking to hire a a qualified applicant to serve as an Investigator in the dynamic Consumer Protection Division. The Consumer Protection Division protects consumers and the legitimate business community from deceptive trade practices, unfair business practices, and excessive utility rates or charges; mediates disputes between consumers and businesses; and educates the public regarding consumer issues. The Attorney General investigates and sues bad actors in Arkansas and Federal courts and often works with other Arkansas and Federal agencies and with other state attorneys general. Investigators (1) assist consumers with a variety of inquiries/complaints and evaluates complaints if violations of consumer protection laws are involved or whether action is necessary; (2) mediate with businesses on behalf of consumers to achieve equitable resolutions of consumer-business problems; (3) refer any non-jurisdictional matters to appropriate agencies; (4) assist business in bringing their practices into compliance with state consumer protection laws; (5) present consumer education and information during speeches and outreach programs; (6) investigate cases involving alleged violations of consumer protection laws; (7) assist in litigation preparation, including but not limited to preparing and organizing case files for review by the assigned attorney; (8) educate consumers about consumer-related issues and how to protect themselves against scammers and identity theft; and (9) assist in the production of documents in response to requests made under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). All candidates must have knowledge of investigative methods, techniques and procedures. Preferably, candidates will have knowledge of Arkansas Consumer Protection statutes. Candidates should also have the ability to interpret and apply statutes, administrative rules and other authorities, and also the skills to apply investigation methods, techniques and procedures to develop evidence and compile information from records, personal interviews and inspections. Successful candidates will have the ability to prioritize, organize, interpret and present complex information. Candidates are also expected to have computer skills, including but not limited to, use of Microsoft Office Suite, and other databases. The ability to handle aggressive, critical, or hostile people via the telephone or in person is also an expectation of the candidate. Candidates should also have the ability to make informative and entertaining presentations to the general public on behalf of the office.
