Summary of role As a key member of the Lantheus Springfield manufacturing site senior leadership team, the Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) Associate Director provides Environmental, Health, and Safety and Radiation Safety leadership across radiopharmaceutical manufacturing (e.g., RLT, PET and isotope products). The RSO Associate Director provides visible leadership to foster a proactive safety culture, ensures compliance with applicable EHS (e.g., EPA, OSHA, DOT, and New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP)) and radiation (e.g., Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and New Jersey Radiation Protection Code) regulations and Lantheus' standards. The RSO Associate Director drives the prevention of injuries/illnesses and environmental releases and oversees the radiation safety program and licensed radioactive material activities in accordance with the site RAM License. This role also has the responsibility to oversee the licensing of Lantheus products for distribution in every state throughout the United States of America. This includes the applicable pharmaceutical manufacturing, warehousing, and distribution licensing required by each individual state regulatory body. This position is based in Springfield, New Jersey and requires a presence on-site 5 days per week, and open to applicants authorized to work for any employer within the United States. Responsibilities Provide day-to-day EHS and Radiation Safety technical leadership for the Evergreen site ensuring environmental, health, safety, and radiation compliance with the applicable federal and state regulations. Measure, analyze, and improve performance to meet business objectives. Establish and govern key metrics (e.g., OSHA injury rate, near misses, safety observations, and EM performance) and use leading indicators to anticipate and mitigate risks to employee health and safety. Develop and maintain deep technical expertise in radiopharmaceutical manufacturing (RLT, PET and isotope products), including radioactive material handling and controls, radiochemistry/radiosynthesis, automated synthesis platforms, in-process controls, and analytical/quality procedures. Ensure technical knowledge is translated into robust procedures, training, and standardized ways of working to prevent health and safety risks and radiation exposure. Create and continuously improve the site EHS management system and compliance programs, including written programs, procedures, inspections, and governance routines that drive consistent execution. Develop, implement, and maintain site safety and environmental procedures and training (e.g., hazard communication, chemical hygiene, LOTO, confined space, hot work, PPE, waste handling, spill response) and verify effectiveness through audits and field observations. Own EHS recordkeeping and reporting, including OSHA 300/300A, incident/near-miss documentation, environmental monitoring records, waste manifests, and other required logs; analyze trends and communicate performance to site leadership. Lead incident management for safety and environmental events, including immediate response/notification, investigation, root cause analysis, corrective and preventive actions (CAPA), and effectiveness checks. Partner with Manufacturing, Engineering, and Facilities to implement safe work controls for routine and non-routine work, including contractor EHS oversight, pre-job risk reviews, permits (hot work/confined space), lockout/tagout, and job hazard analyses. Own site environmental compliance programs as applicable (e.g., air, wastewater/stormwater, hazardous waste, SPCC), including permit conditions, routine inspections, sampling/monitoring, submissions, and coordination with EPA, NJDEP, and other agencies. Manage chemical and waste stewardship, including hazardous waste accumulation areas, vendor oversight, manifesting, storage compatibility, spill prevention/response readiness, and periodic drills as required. Drive EHS engagement and capability building through onboarding and annual refresher training, safety communications, and coaching for leaders and employees; lead safety committees and routine site safety walks. Serve as key EHS and Radiation technical representative during regulatory interactions and inspections (e.g., EPA, OSHA, NRC, NJDEP and other agencies). Ensure sustained inspection readiness, effective responses to information requests, and timely completion of associated commitments. Maintain an understanding of, and up-to-date copies of: NRC and NJ DEP regulations. The RAM License. Current versions of procedures related to radiation safety. Ensure that radioactive material at the Springfield facility is limited to the types and quantities of the materials listed on the RAM License. Amend the RAM License whenever there are changes in licensed activities, responsible individuals, or information commitments provided to NJ DEP during the licensing process. Provide necessary information on all aspects of radiation protection to personnel at all levels of responsibility, according to the conditions of the license. Maintain physical security of RAM and post documents as required by New Jersey Administrative Code (NJAC) 7:28. Implement control measures that limit radiation exposures As Low as is Reasonably Achievable (ALARA). Oversee proper delivery, receipt, use, and performance of radiation surveys for all shipments of radioactive material arriving at or leaving from the facility, as well as accurate packaging and labeling of all radioactive material leaving the facility. This includes monitoring and surveys of all areas in which radioactive material is possessed and used. Maintain any required records related to the safe use and transport of radioactive material, including, but not limited to: Shipping documentation. Survey and wipe test results. Personnel monitoring records. Effluent monitoring records. Instrument calibration reports. Incident reports. Radiation safety program audit reports. Distribute and process personnel radiation-monitoring equipment, determine the need for and evaluate bioassays, monitor personnel radiation exposure and bioassay records for trends and high exposure, notify individuals and their supervisors of radiation exposures approaching established limits, and recommend appropriate remedial action. Install, monitor, and replace facility or area dosimetry to appropriately manage and monitor radiation levels throughout the facility. Immediately terminate any unsafe condition or activity that is found to be a threat to employee or public health and safety or property. Supervise decontamination and recovery operations. Develop, implement, maintain, and distribute, as appropriate, up-to-date operating, emergency and security procedures. Conduct training programs and otherwise instruct all personnel in the proper procedures for handling radioactive material prior to possession and/or use, both at periodic intervals (refresher training), and as required by changes in procedures, equipment, and regulations. Supervise and coordinate the radioactive waste disposal program, including effluent monitoring and recordkeeping of waste storage and disposal. Oversee the storage of radioactive material not in current use, including waste. Perform or arrange for leak tests on all sealed sources and calibration of radiation survey instruments. Hold periodic meetings and provide reports to management as needed to ensure appropriate administration of the radiation safety program. Perform periodic audits of the radiation safety program to ensure compliance with: All applicable NRC and NJ DEP regulations The terms and conditions of the RAM License The content and implementation of the program to achieve occupational doses and doses to members of the public that are ALARA. The requirement that all records be properly maintained. Ensure that the results of audits, identified deficiencies, and recommendations for change are documented, provided to management for review, and ensure that prompt action is taken to correct deficiencies. Communicate audit results and corrective actions to all personnel who possess/use radioactive material. Ensure that all incidents, accidents, and personnel exposure to radiation in excess of ALARA or established limits are investigated and reported to the NJ DEP and other appropriate authorities as required and within the required time limits. Coordinate the PDMA application process for all Lantheus products distributed in the United States. Maintain state licensure to enable the distribution and sale of all Lantheus products in all 50 states. Basic Qualifications BA in a scientific discipline/AAS with a minimum of eight (8) years' health physics and related EH&S experience, with a minimum of two (2) years' experience as a Radiation Safety Officer highly preferred. Demonstrated working knowledge of applicable radiation safety regulations and guidance (e.g., NRC and New Jersey Radiation Protection Code), license conditions, and ALARA principles. Experience with radiation monitoring and contamination control practices, including performing/overseeing surveys, wipe tests, personnel monitoring/dosimetry, and maintaining required records. Ability to lead response to radiological incidents/events, conduct investigations, implement corrective actions, and support required notifications and reporting to regulatory agencies within required timeframes. Must be able to meet the RSO qualification requirements specified by the site Radioactive Materials License and applicable regulatory agencies (or obtain qualification within an agreed-upon timeframe). Experience with hazardous/regulated waste and chemical management, including accumulation area requirements, waste characterization, vendor coordination, manifesting, and internal training/communication. Ability to lead or support environmental inspections and audits (internal and regulatory), identify gaps, and drive corrective and preventive actions (CAPA) to closure. Preferred Qualifications Previous experience as a Radiation Safety Officer. Strong communication and training capability, including developing and delivering radiation safety training and partnering effectively with Manufacturing, Quality, Engineering, and Facilities. Experience supporting and maintaining environmental permits and compliance obligations (as applicable), including routine inspections, sampling/monitoring, recordkeeping, agency correspondence, and timely submittals. Working knowledge of key environmental regulatory programs applicable to a manufacturing site (e.g., EPA and NJDEP requirements related to hazardous waste/RCRA, air, wastewater/stormwater, chemical storage and spill prevention (SPCC), and emergency planning/right-to-know). Demonstrated capability to respond to and investigate environmental incidents/spills, coordinate containment/cleanup, complete required notifications, and implement sustainable corrective actions. Proven ability to influence and partner cross-functionally to integrate environmental requirements into operations and projects, communicate expectations clearly, and coach leaders and employees on compliant practices. Actual base pay offered may vary depending on a number of factors such as job-related knowledge, skills and experience. Employees in this position are eligible for a discretionary performance-based cash incentive, and depending on the level of the role may be eligible for a discretionary annual equity award.
