Job Title: Construction Laborer / Erosion Control Technician Job Description
In this role, you will focus on installing and maintaining erosion control systems, including fences and wattles, on a civil construction site in Michigan City, IN. Work Environment
The work takes place on a civil construction site located on open farmland in Michigan City, IN, subject to the full range of Indiana weather. Summers are humid and hot with a high chance of pop-up thunderstorms, while winters bring cold rain, freezing rain, snow, wind, and extreme cold temperatures. You primarily work day shifts from approximately 6:30 AM to 6:30 PM, Monday through Saturday, with significant site activity throughout the day. The environment requires strict adherence to OSHA safety standards and site-specific protocols, with many crews and equipment operating simultaneously. Communication and situational awareness are critical for safety and efficiency. A professional appearance and professional behavior are expected at all times in line with the site code of conduct, which is explained during onboarding.

Responsibilities
- Install and maintain fences and wattles to prevent erosion in accordance with storm water pollution protection plans (SWIP).
- Manually drive posts by hand using a pneumatic post driver and secure fence material to steel T-posts.
- Ensure proper installation of fences in trenches created by a silt fence plow, maintaining the integrity of the erosion control system.
- Clean sediment from fences and surrounding areas using shovels, particularly after rain and runoff events.
- Shovel and spread dirt and rock to grade and stabilize work areas as directed by site supervision.
- Perform seeding and blow straw to support soil stabilization and erosion control measures.
- Carry T-posts, silt fence rolls, and other materials across uneven terrain, including muddy conditions.
- Work outdoors in all weather conditions, maintaining productivity and safety on open farmland.
- Follow OSHA safety standards and site-specific safety protocols at all times.
- Maintain a high level of communication and situational awareness on a busy civil construction site with significant activity.
- Demonstrate professional appearance and behavior in accordance with the site code of conduct.
- Collaborate with heavy equipment operators and other crew members while staying out of equipment operating zones.
- Support general labor tasks related to civil, commercial, and solar construction as needed.
- Experience in civil construction and general labor, including work on dirt, landscaping, and commercial or solar construction projects.
- Ability to bend, twist, stoop, and kneel repeatedly throughout the workday.
- Ability to lift 50 pounds or more to at or near head level safely and consistently.
- Proficiency in carrying T-posts, silt fence rolls, and similar materials across the site.
- Ability to use shovels effectively for digging, cleaning, and moving sediment and soil.
- Comfort working outside on open farmland in various weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and wind.
- Strong communication skills and awareness of surroundings to work safely on a busy construction site.
- Commitment to following OSHA safety standards and site safety protocols.
- Valid driver's license and ability to meet motor vehicle record (MVR) requirements.
- Familiarity with Storm Water Pollution Protection Plans (SWIP) and erosion control practices.
- Experience working in muddy conditions and performing seeding and straw blowing tasks.
- Exposure to civil construction equipment and environments, including GPS blade, CAT, and related technologies.
- Ability to work extended hours and overtime as needed to meet project demands.
