GENERAL STATEMENT
OF JOB:
The Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing provides specialized instruction, advocacy, and direct/itinerant support to students who are deaf or hard of hearing, ranging from early childhood through high school. This role is responsible for facilitating academic, communication, and social-emotional growth tailored to each student's unique learning style, degree of hearing loss, and primary mode of communication (e.g., American Sign Language, Listening and Spoken Language, Total Communication).

QUALIFICATIONS,
EXPERIENCE AND
COMPETENCIES:
Qualifications
• Education: Bachelor's degree in Special Education (Deaf/Hard of Hearing) required; Master's degree preferred.
• Licensure: Valid State Teaching License with a Deaf and Hard of Hearing (PreK 12) endorsement.
• Certifications: LSLS (AVT/AVEd), CED, or high ASLPI/EIPA score preferred depending on program focus.
Experience
• Instructional: 2+ years teaching deaf/hard of hearing students across various communication modes (ASL, Auditory-Oral, or Total Communication).
• Case Management: Demonstrated proficiency writing and managing compliant IEPs/504 plans and running team meetings.
• Hearing Technology: Hands-on experience operating and troubleshooting FM/DM systems, hearing aids, and cochlear implants.

AND ABILITIES
DUTIES AND
RESPONSIBILITIES:

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs)
• Knowledge: Deep understanding of hearing loss, language acquisition (ASL, LSL, or Total Communication), IEP compliance laws (IDEA/504), and audiogram interpretation.
• Skills: Expert at modifying curriculum, running/troubleshooting hearing technology (FM/DM systems, hearing aids, cochlear implants), and analyzing diagnostic progress data.
• Abilities: Able to collaborate with audiologists, teachers, and parents, foster student self-advocacy, navigate Deaf culture, and manage multi-site caseloads efficiently.
Duties & Responsibilities
• Instruction & Advocacy: Provide specialized instruction aligned with IEP goals, support individual communication modes, and teach students self-advocacy and device care.
• IEP Management: Evaluate student needs, write compliant IEPs/504 plans, lead team meetings, and systematically track academic and language progress.
• Consultation & Tech Care: Train general education staff on accommodations, manage classroom acoustic setups, and perform routine checks on hearing technology with educational audiologists.

SALARY : $60,307 - $85,536 approximate ( BOCES Faculty Association contract)
