Core Responsibilities:

An OT’s day-to-day is highly varied, but generally follows a clinical cycle of assessment and intervention:

• Evaluations: Assessing a patient’s physical, cognitive, and emotional abilities. This includes testing range of motion, memory, and environmental barriers in the home or workplace.
• Customized Treatment Plans: Developing goals to improve a patient’s ability to perform Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) , such as dressing, eating, or working.
• Home/Workplace Modifications: Recommending adaptive equipment (like reachers or specialized computer mice) and layout changes to improve accessibility.
• Caregiver Education: Training family members or employers on how to support the patient’s independence.
• Documentation: Maintaining detailed records for insurance reimbursement and progress tracking.

To succeed in this role, you need a unique blend of scientific knowledge and "soft" personality traits.

Technical Requirements

• Education: A Master’s degree (MOT) or Doctorate (OTD) in Occupational Therapy from an accredited program.
• Licensure: Passing the NBCOT (National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy) exam and obtaining a state license.
• Knowledge: Deep understanding of anatomy, physiology, and psychology.

Interpersonal Skills

• Empathy: Understanding the frustration of losing independence and providing emotional support.
• Adaptability: No two patients are the same; you have to think on your feet when a specific exercise isn't working.
• Patience: Progress can be slow, and OTs are often the primary cheerleaders for their patients.
