Position Summary

The Emergency Department Registered Nurse (RN) provides comprehensive nursing care to patients of all ages presenting with emergent, urgent, and non-urgent medical conditions. Working in a fast-paced, high-acuity emergency department, the RN is responsible for rapid assessment, triage, stabilization, treatment, patient education, and coordination of care while collaborating with a multidisciplinary healthcare team.

The Emergency Department RN utilizes critical thinking, sound clinical judgment, and evidence-based practice to deliver safe, compassionate, and high-quality patient care while ensuring compliance with all regulatory and professional standards.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Patient Assessment & Triage

• Perform comprehensive nursing assessments upon patient arrival.
• Utilize Emergency Severity Index (ESI) triage principles to prioritize care.
• Recognize subtle changes in patient condition and initiate rapid interventions.
• Continuously reassess patients throughout the emergency department stay.

Emergency Patient Care

Provide care for patients experiencing:

• Trauma injuries
• Cardiac emergencies (STEMI, chest pain, arrhythmias)
• Stroke and neurological emergencies
• Respiratory distress and failure
• Sepsis
• Shock
• Behavioral health emergencies
• Pediatric emergencies
• Orthopedic injuries
• Obstetrical emergencies
• Medical and surgical emergencies

Clinical Procedures

• Initiate peripheral IV access and manage vascular access devices.
• Administer medications, blood products, and IV infusions.
• Perform wound care and assist with fracture stabilization.
• Assist with conscious sedation procedures.
• Prepare patients for emergency surgery or specialty procedures.
• Operate cardiac monitors, infusion pumps, ventilators, and emergency equipment.
• Assist during intubations, central line placement, chest tube insertion, and other emergency procedures.

Critical Care & Resuscitation

• Respond to medical emergencies and trauma activations.
• Participate in Code Blue and rapid response events.
• Perform Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) interventions.
• Participate in pediatric resuscitations.
• Provide post-resuscitation stabilization and ongoing monitoring.

Collaboration

• Laboratory personnel
• Radiology staff
• Pharmacists
• EMS personnel
• Social workers
• Case managers
• Security and behavioral health teams

Documentation

• Maintain accurate and timely electronic medical record documentation.
• Document assessments, interventions, medication administration, and patient responses.
• Ensure compliance with EMTALA, HIPAA, and regulatory requirements.

Patient & Family Education

• Explain diagnoses, treatments, and discharge instructions.
• Provide medication education.
• Promote injury prevention and health education.
• Support patients and families during stressful and critical situations.

Quality & Safety

• Maintain infection prevention standards.
• Adhere to patient safety initiatives.
• Participate in quality improvement projects.
• Support department performance metrics related to patient flow, throughput, and clinical outcomes.

Minimum Qualifications

• Current Registered Nurse license
• Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred
• Minimum of one to two years of Emergency Department experience preferred
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS)
• Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
• Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
• NIH Stroke Scale certification
• Ability to work days, evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, and on-call assignments as required
