Description
The Medical Assistant provides support to medical practitioners providing patient care services in an ambulatory setting. Responsibilities include both clinical and administrative duties necessary to provide quality patient care in a medical group practice setting. Some of these duties include but are not limited to: assisting the practitioner in the performance of medical procedures, conducting follow up with patients on lab and test results, administering immunizations, and screening patient calls as needed, rooming patients, obtaining ECG's, preloading and confirming office appointments.
Responsibilities
- Demonstrates effective and courteous customer, physician/practice staff, and other hospital staff communication skills.
- Answers all calls promptly and courteously.
- Responds to and resolves issues promptly through effective communications.
- Uses appropriate chain of command.
- Feedback is provided in a constructive manner.
- Participates in problem solving groups as requested.
- Gives accurate and timely patient care reports.
- Refers patients to the Clinic Coordinator for follow-up.
- Greets patients and families courteously and assists them when needed
- Take accurate notes while witnessing the physician-patient encounter or while receiving dictation from the physician
- Transcribe clinical information into the electronic medical record to document the patient visit, in real-time, for every patient evaluated by the physician
- Helps administrative/office staff with sharing phone call coverage.
- Is proficient in telephone messaging per policy.
- 100% documented evidence of attendance of staff/department meetings, and/or reading/initializing the minutes, all other memos and postings.
- Collects, reviews and documents patient's current health status and history according to standard.
- Is knowledgeable in preparing patients to be seen in the practice.
- Documents all aspects of the nursing service according to hospital and practice standards.
- Performs and documents results of point of care testing and appropriate interventions, EKGs, visual acuity, audiometry, NST, tympanometry, peak flow, nebulizer treatment, pulse oximetry, wound dressings and ear irrigations are performed and documented per practice guidelines, (after orientation is complete).
- Follow-up visits are scheduled at time of discharge, per protocol and Patient/Family, etc. is notified of next appointment.
- Assist physicians with admissions by calling registration, call report to the Unit, photocopy all practice documentation to go with the patient, arrange transport. Completes all paperwork and sends with patient.
- Performs ongoing patient screening, planning and implementation of patient care by effectively implementing the care, and teaching plan in collaboration with provider and clinical leader.
- Participates in and/or delegates daily maintenance of working environment (e.g., cleaning, stocking of rooms).
- Coordinates patient educational materials and ensures their availability.
- Documents patient readiness to learn and barriers to learning.
- Coordinates patient education meetings and projects
- Duties are adequately performed as needed or seeks out supervisor for guidelines.
- Orders and inventories all state-supplied immunizations.
- Ensures proper storage of state immunizations.
- 100% compliance of: iCARE (complete annually at least seven days prior evaluation), Employee Updates, and any other in-services/meetings and training as assigned.
- Maintains BLS certification. Maintains PPD certification.
- Participates in multidisciplinary committee work that relates to unit of practice.
- Demonstrates correct technique in the use of equipment, according to specific product information and policy and procedure manuals.
- Follows appropriate procedure for obtaining and returning/cleansing/disposing of equipment and supplies.
- Is responsible for unit cleanliness, maintaining a neat and safe environment.
- Administers and documents medications, according to nursing policy and procedure following the 5 Rights: Right Patient; Right Medication; Right Time; Right Route; Right Dose
- Performs and documents results of blood glucose monitoring and appropriate intervention.
- Ensures sterile technique(s) are maintained: Patient and room are ready when the provider arrives. Consent is signed and available. Room and supplies are processed according to Northern Light Health Infection Control policies.
- Ensures specimens are labeled and processed correctly per policy.
- Appropriate patient education occurs post procedure.
- Immunizations are scheduled and administered according to practice guidelines and documented. (if applicable)
- Medication errors are reported to provider and supervision immediately
- Walk-in patients are treated according to protocol.
- Blood pressure checks are performed and documented per policy.
- Patient Confidentiality is protected at all times.
- Is responsible for logging refrigerator temps, eye wash station, check emergency lights and fire extinguishers.
- Ensure practice adheres to TJC, OSHA, and organization policies and procedures.
- patient's fee ticket is reviewed before the patient leaves the clinic.
- All medications and treatments are documented on fee ticket.
- Organizes work to finish on time 95% of the time avoiding overtime.
- Participates in annual mandatory in-services.
- Has documented evidence appropriate to level of practice and certification.
