Permitting Project Manager - Environmental Services (Chicago)

Overview Burns & McDonnell is seeking an Environmental Project Manager to manage projects and oversee environmental permitting within our Chicago Office. This position requires thorough knowledge of federal, state, and local permitting requirements for development and construction of new projects in the U.S. across market sectors such as oil and gas, electric, and renewables. The position will report to the Chicago Natural and Cultural Resources Department Manager. Responsibilities Project management for multiple environmental projects with multi-faceted components. Participate in business development activities, including proposals, cost estimates, client-facing presentations, and management of relationships with existing clients while contributing to the growth of the Chicago business. Provide leadership, guidance, and mentorship to less experienced staff. Additional Responsibilities Lead project teams on tasks including field surveys, environmental permitting with federal, state, and local agencies, and review of project reports and materials. Interface with agencies to obtain approvals, submit permit applications, and prepare timely responses. Interface with clients to develop relationships, build business, and expand services to new clients. Manage work within budget and schedule expectations for each project. Apply technical and creative solutions to natural resources permitting. Advise clients on strategies to obtain permits and maintain regulatory compliance. Provide guidance on regulations and permitting through USACE, USEPA, and various state/local regulations for environmental permitting of new projects. Publish technical papers and deliver presentations at conferences. Travel may be required as project or client commitments require. All other duties as assigned. Qualifications B.S. or M.S. in environmental science, environmental planning, or environmental/civil engineering preferred with at least 7 years of applicable experience managing environmental permitting projects in the upper Midwest. Experience across multiple market sectors is a plus, with emphasis on electric utility, renewable, and oil & gas facility markets. Ability to lead negotiations with regulators on permitting requirements. Knowledge of wetlands, threatened and endangered species, stormwater and erosion & sediment control, cultural resources and architectural history, and the National Environmental Policy Act. Technical expertise in one or more of these fields. Self-motivated, detail-oriented, and able to collaborate in a team. Experience managing staff or direct reports and career path development, mentoring, and growth. Ability to manage in a dynamic team environment, work under deadlines, and interact professionally with regulators, public officials, and clients. Experience with environmental permitting in other Midwest states is desired.
