This role involves providing essential legal advice and support on a variety of commercial initiatives and transactions for the Discover Network, working closely with business and legal partners across the organization. You will find that the Legal Department is not a "check the box" function but instead, an important voice and strategic partner in all aspects of the business.About the Role:The attorney will provide support for the Discover Network on the US Commercial and Product legal team with a focus on merchant relationships. The ideal candidate should have expertise in commercial contracting. This position will have responsibility for:Providing expert counsel and strategic guidance across a critical spectrum of areas impacting commercial relationships, including commercial contracting and risk identification and mitigationNegotiating, drafting, and guiding implementation of commercial agreements, working in close collaboration with legal and business colleagues and other subject matter expertsSupporting credit, fintech and payment innovation related new product initiatives and innovation across the Discover NetworkSupporting the development and maintenance of competitive rule sets for the Discover NetworkIdentifying and supporting process improvements to promote agility in legal and related business operations, including contract template improvementsPartnering collaboratively with other internal counsel and business teams across the enterprisePartnering with Risk and Compliance teams to ensure comprehensive supportThe successful candidate will have the following:Demonstrated leadership qualities and ability to get issues resolved across organizational bordersAbility to understand complex topics quickly with depth that allows for concise and simple adviceProblem solving mentality rather than thinking only like a legal technicianExcellent judgment with the ability to predict long-term consequencesGrowth mindset with an openness to new ideas, diverse perspectives, and unconventional solutionsStrong people skills - we're looking for someone who can build collegial and effective relationships with colleagues and clientsOwnership mentality, thinking like an owner vs. an employeeSolid time management skills with the ability to prioritize a significant volume of work and to manage multiple deadlinesExcellent communication skills with the ability to influence others and write conciselyBasic Qualifications:Juris Doctor from an accredited law schoolActive member in good standing of at least one state barAt least 8 years of experience in a law firm, in-house legal department, or a combinationPreferred Qualifications:10+ years of experience in a law firm, in-house legal department, or a combinationMerchant and/or payment network experienceAt this time, Capital One will not sponsor a new applicant for employment authorization for this position.This role is hybrid meaning associates spend 3 days per week in-person at one of our offices listed on this job posting.The minimum and maximum full-time annual salaries for this role are listed below, by location. Salaries for part-time roles will be prorated based upon the agreed upon number of hours to be regularly worked.Chicago, IL: $209,500 - $239,100 for Director, Asst General CounselMcLean, VA: $230,400 - $263,000 for Director, Asst General CounselNew York, NY: $251,400 - $286,900 for Director, Asst General CounselRichmond, VA: $209,500 - $239,100 for Director, Asst General CounselRiverwoods, IL: $209,500 - $239,100 for Director, Asst General CounselCandidates hired to work in other locations will be subject to the pay range associated with that location, and the actual annualized salary amount offered to any candidate at the time of hire will be reflected solely in the candidate's offer letter.This role is also eligible to earn performance based incentive compensation, which may include cash bonus(es) and/or long term incentives (LTI).
