A day in the life

You arrive on site, review the pour plan, and help align forms for sidewalks, curbs, and gutters with the correct pitch and depth. As the concrete trucks roll in, you verify slump, calculate any needed adjustments, and coordinate ordering as required. You screed (wood or aluminum), float, trowel, edge, and broom-finish to spec. Reinforcement goes in with rebar or wire mesh, and you place expansion joints where needed. Once set, you perform saw cuts in concrete—and when required, in asphalt—to create clean, durable joints. Throughout the shift, you shovel, rake, and lift as part of a hands-on, fast-moving crew. You keep the site tidy, secure tools and equipment, and follow safety procedures and PPE requirements at all times. When needed, you may operate trucks or other site-moving equipment. And you’re always ready to jump in on other assigned tasks.

What you’ll handle

• Smooth and finish poured concrete for driveways, walks, sidewalks, roads, and curbs using hand and power tools
• Align and set forms with correct pitch/depth for sidewalks, walls, pillars, and other structures
• Use wooden and aluminum screeds to level surfaces
• Operate finishing tools: float, trowel, edgers, brooms, and related equipment
• Clean and strip forms properly after use
• Assess slump accurately; calculate needs and coordinate concrete ordering
• Place reinforcement (rebar or wire mesh) and install expansion joints
• Perform saw cutting in concrete and asphalt
• Carry out strenuous manual labor on heavy highway and other construction projects
• Maintain a clean, secure job site to eliminate hazards
• Ensure a safe work environment by following all safety policies and using appropriate tools/equipment
• Wear required PPE at all times
• Drive trucks or other moving equipment as needed
• Perform other duties as required or assigned
