FOOD SERVICE WORKER

Food Service WorkerUnder supervision, performs the more routine duties involved in the preparation and serving of food and in the cleaning of kitchen equipment and facilities. May assume additional duties in the absence of the manager. Food Service Workers receive on-the-job training in the basics of food preparation and cafeteria operation. Nature of work requires sustained moderate physical effort, operation of standard food service equipment, and continuous standing. The work is performed under the supervision of a cafeteria manager or other cafeteria employee.Knowledge, skills, and abilities: Some knowledge of food preparation. Ability to follow food sanitation procedures. Ability to learn prescribed food preparation methods and school cafeteria operations. Ability to retrieve necessary menu items and recipe ingredients. Ability to comprehend and follow instructions. Ability to communicate with customers and coworkers. Basic human relations skills needed to work cooperatively in close proximity with others under constant deadlines.Education, training, and experience: Completion of the ninth grade required. High School or GED diploma preferred. Experience with food preparation techniques and safety procedures. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.Physical demands: Ability to perform work requiring sustained moderate physical effort, operation of commercial food service equipment, movement of objects weighing 40-60 pounds, continuous standing, and extreme variations in temperature.Examples of duties and responsibilities1. Prepares vegetables and fruits for salads, soups, sandwiches, hot and cold beverages, hot dogs, hamburgers, and other menu items, following a standardized recipe.2. Sets up cold and hot food counter for serving; properly stocks counter and carts with food, plates, utensils, napkins, and condiments; serves food to students and faculty.3. May act as cashier for cafeteria sales; maintains accurate account of cash collected and meals served; completes required reports, including computer input.4. Washes dishes, pots, pans and other utensils, and cleans kitchen equipment and work area; assists in the receipt of, and unpacks supplies and places them on shelves or in freezer; operates a variety of standard kitchen equipment.5. May act as a food server, making sure all portion sizes meet with the current guidelines. After serving time is over, putting food away, following established procedures, and resetting the serving line for the next day.6. Use basic recordkeeping skills to complete necessary paperwork, such as production reports and temperature logs.7.
