Speech Language Pathologist II- Inpatient Feeding Therapist

Overview To perform evaluations, establish appropriate goals, formulate treatment plans, provide treatment interventions, maintain comprehensive documentation, and assist with coordination of care within the scope of practice of speech language pathology, to include feeding and swallowing disorders, in the inpatient, outpatient, and ambulatory care clinic settings. Essential Functions Conducts communication and/or feeding assessments/reassessments according to department policy and procedure that are appropriate to area of service delivery and indication for service. Gathers and analyzes information from diagnosis, indication, medical history and current status, chronologic/cognitive/developmental age, parent/caregiver/physician concern, past response to care. Analyzes information to plan for, select and provide a comprehensive, objective assessment of expressive/receptive communication skills and/or feeding and dysphagia skills; reports diagnostic findings and develops clinical recommendations and plan of care. Performs oral pharyngeal motility studies (OPMs) according to hospital procedure and interprets results in coordination with the Radiologist to determine swallowing function/dysfunction; develops a plan of care including intervention frequency, types, and goals. Collaborates with patient, caregiver, and other healthcare providers to set realistic goals and develop a patient-/caregiver-focused, outcomes-oriented plan of care. Identifies measurable long-term and short-term goals for communication and/or feeding skill development. Continuously assesses, reassesses and modifies goals and plans of care based on patient status and caregiver feedback; documents care from initial assessment through discharge (outpatient setting). Prepares for sessions, beginning and ending on time; includes caregivers in therapy sessions and provides education, strategies, and techniques for daily routines. Demonstrates problem-solving skills and adaptability; pursues opportunities to collaborate with other healthcare professionals. Utilizes effective communication with client, caregiver, professionals and other healthcare providers; facilitates referrals to appropriate resources. Addresses patient attendance issues by educating on and enforcing department policy; completes comprehensive documentation relevant to the setting and ensures documentation supports billed charges. Assists with programs and processes that support high-quality care, current clinical practice, outcomes measures and fiscally responsible practice. Participates in team meetings, contributes to new programs or projects, and supports implementation of new processes within the department. Supports growth and skill development of self, team, students and community; shares knowledge and expertise with team members. Prepares for and participates in educational opportunities; assists with orientation of new team members and student education as appropriate. Regular attendance is an essential function of the job. Education Qualifications Master's Degree from an accredited college or university in Communication Disorders/Speech Language Pathology (Required). Experience Qualifications Experience working with pediatric patients or a pediatric clinical internship (Preferred). Skills and Abilities Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing. Basic computer skills. Ability to organize responsibilities and manage time efficiently. Ability to work effectively in a team setting. Licenses and Certifications BCLS - Basic Life Support through the American Heart Association (Required). SP-L - Licensed Speech Pathologist current and valid in Nebraska (Required). Certificate of Clinical Competency from ASHA (Required or if completing Clinical Fellowship Year; CCSS within 1 year). Inpatient and Outpatient Feeding Competencies (Required). Weekend and holiday obligations; staffing-dependent. Other role-specific requirements as applicable.
