Job Title: Quality Assurance Specialist
Job Description
This role focuses on ensuring that all manufactured parts meet established quality standards, ISO requirements, and continuous improvement objectives. The Quality Assurance Specialist reads and interprets customer requirements, performs dimensional inspections, programs and troubleshoots CMM equipment, and supports both documentation and shop floor activities. The position offers a well-rounded mix of inspection, CMM work, quality administration, and direct collaboration with machinists and production staff, with the opportunity to grow into a Quality Manager role over time.
Responsibilities
- Interpret and apply customer requirements, including Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T), to ensure parts meet specifications.
- Ensure adherence to quality standards, ISO requirements, and continuous improvement objectives across manufacturing processes.
- Perform dimensional inspections and verify part quality using CMMs, calipers, micrometers, comparators, and other inspection tools.
- Program, set up, and troubleshoot CMM equipment, specifically using CMM Manager 3.9, to support accurate and efficient inspections.
- Analyze SolidWorks and STEP files to answer dimensional questions, including bolt circle locations, hole-to-hole relationships, diameters, and other critical measurements.
- Review and approve manufacturing processes to confirm they meet quality and customer requirements.
- Conduct First Article Inspections, In-Process Inspections, and Final Inspections, and document results accurately.
- Prepare, issue, and manage Nonconforming Material Reports and corrective actions to address quality issues.
- Lead or participate in Material Review Board activities to evaluate nonconforming materials and determine appropriate dispositions.
- Manage and maintain the calibration program, including scheduling, tracking, and verifying calibration of gauges and inspection tools.
- Ensure the correct inspection tools and equipment are available, properly maintained, and suitable for the required measurements.
- Train and support other quality department team members in inspection tools, procedures, and quality best practices.
- Help expedite customer parts and support customer needs by addressing quality-related questions and issues as required.
- Maintain gauge calibrations and associated records to ensure traceability and compliance.
- Complete inspection reports for new jobs and maintain accurate documentation of inspection activities and results.
- Prepare information and reports for management meetings, including scrap logs, scrap data, and month-end quality reporting.
- Create and maintain quality documentation, procedures, and forms using Excel and Word.
- Provide day-to-day floor support by working directly with machinists and production employees to solve quality issues and answer technical questions.
- Attend meetings and other company functions necessary to perform duties and support business and organizational development.
- Help implement management decisions and contribute to achieving company objectives related to quality and continuous improvement.
- Conduct employee performance reviews for quality team members when assigned.
- Monitor and report on quality-related activities and provide relevant information to management.
- Attend training sessions to develop and maintain relevant knowledge and skills in quality, inspection, and related tools.
- Follow company policies, procedures, and instructions while promoting a culture of quality and continuous improvement.
Essential Skills
- Minimum of 3 years of inspection experience, including hands-on CMM experience.
- Proficiency in CMM programming and troubleshooting, specifically with CMM Manager 3.9.
- Strong SolidWorks proficiency, including the ability to analyze STEP files and interpret complex dimensional requirements.
- Working knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
- Experience with machining or manufacturing processes and an understanding of how they impact part quality.
- Proficiency in using inspection tools such as CMMs, calipers, micrometers, comparators, and other measurement equipment.
- Ability to read, write, and speak English with complete comprehension.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to investigate and resolve quality issues.
- Excellent communication skills for working with customers, suppliers, machinists, and associates at all levels.
- Project management skills to organize, prioritize, and complete quality tasks and initiatives.
- Computer literacy, including the ability to develop and use spreadsheets in Excel and prepare documents in Word.
- Ability to work effectively with all levels of employees and function as a collaborative team member.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience supporting or participating in Material Review Boards and handling Nonconforming Material Reports.
- Experience in ISO-based quality systems and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Experience creating and maintaining scrap logs, scrap data, and quality metrics for reporting purposes.
- Ability to train and mentor other quality team members in inspection techniques and procedures.
- Experience conducting or contributing to employee performance reviews within a quality or manufacturing environment.
- Strong negotiation skills when working with internal teams and external partners to resolve quality concerns.
- Interest and aptitude to grow into a Quality Manager role over time, building on strong CMM and SolidWorks capabilities.
- Comfort working in a role that blends inspection, CMM work, documentation, and shop floor collaboration rather than focusing on a single narrow function.
Work Environment
The position is based in a small, close-knit manufacturing facility of approximately 20 employees, offering a relaxed, team-oriented atmosphere. The environment emphasizes learning and development, with a philosophy of being a “learning shop, not an earning shop,” and a strong commitment to investing time and resources in employee growth. Work is evenly split between part inspection, CMM programming and troubleshooting, documentation and quality administration, and direct support on the shop floor. You will regularly use technologies such as CMM Manager 3.9, SolidWorks, Excel, Word, and a variety of precision measuring instruments. The company is financially stable, operates without debt, and has a history of avoiding layoffs, providing a secure and consistent workplace where employees can focus on building long-term careers. The role requires frequent interaction with machinists, production staff, and other team members in a collaborative, supportive setting.
