Senior Data Analyst

Optomi, in partnership with a leading financial regulatory organization, is seeking a Senior Data Analyst to join their team in Rockville, MD or Tysons Corner, VA. This role will focus heavily on large-scale data analysis, surveillance systems, regulatory monitoring, and SQL-driven investigations within capital markets data environments.

The Senior Data Analyst will work closely with business and technical stakeholders to validate surveillance logic, investigate data anomalies, support regulatory compliance initiatives, and ensure the accuracy of automated monitoring systems. This person will be responsible for analyzing massive datasets, interpreting complex business rules and source code, and translating technical findings into actionable business insights.

The ideal candidate is a self-starter with advanced SQL skills, strong analytical abilities, and experience working within regulated financial or data-driven environments. This individual should be comfortable working independently, digging deep into complex datasets, and communicating findings to both technical and business audiences.

What Type of Experience Does the Right Candidate Have?

• 5+ years of experience in financial technology, regulatory technology, surveillance systems, capital markets, or data analytics
• Advanced SQL experience, including complex joins, aggregations, and window functions
• Experience working with large-scale datasets containing millions or billions of records
• Proficiency in at least one scripting or programming language
• Experience analyzing and validating data processing pipelines
• Ability to read and interpret business logic and source code
• Strong investigative and problem-solving skills
• Experience identifying, troubleshooting, and resolving data discrepancies
• Ability to translate business requirements into technical specifications
• Strong documentation and communication skills
• Experience explaining technical findings to non-technical stakeholders
• Familiarity with financial services, regulatory reporting, or capital markets environments preferred
• Experience with AI-assisted analytics, documentation, or automation tools is a plus

Responsibilities

• Analyze market activity and surveillance data to identify anomalies and regulatory exceptions
• Write complex SQL queries to support investigations and business analysis
• Validate surveillance system outputs and compare Production versus UAT results
• Investigate data quality issues and perform root cause analysis
• Interpret source code and business logic to understand surveillance pattern behavior
• Document surveillance processes, data flows, requirements, and system functionality
• Maintain and enhance knowledge repositories for surveillance patterns and regulatory controls
• Develop and execute test cases to validate new releases and enhancements
• Support UAT, quality control, and release validation activities
• Collaborate with engineering teams to refine requirements and improve system performance
• Leverage AI tools to accelerate analysis, documentation, and workflow efficiency while ensuring regulatory accuracy
• Present findings and recommendations to business stakeholders and leadership teams
