Interpret and evaluate physician orders for appropriateness and safety. Provide information and recommendations to ensure the safe, timely, accurate and appropriate administration of medications. Actively participate in teaching, education, and monitoring efforts. Comply with all state and federal regulations, established peer standards, and hospital policies and procedures. Responsibilities Medication Processing and Dispensing Reviews, interprets, and verifies medication orders for safety and appropriateness in a timely manner. Conducts patient profile reviews prior to verifying/dispensing and resolves basic order entry and prescribing problems. Dispenses accurately labeled medications in the appropriate packaging in a timely manner. Understands all drug preparation techniques and can perform or oversee the timely preparation of medications. Ensures all sterile compounded medications and IV solutions are handled and labeled according to regulatory standards and policies. Complies with required Pharmacy Department documentation in all areas with clear, concise reporting. Assists in inventory control to reduce waste and can obtain drugs in select emergency situations. Suggests appropriate alternatives to non‑formulary medications. Clinical Pharmacy and Drug Information Demonstrates strong problem‑solving skills and offers reasonable solutions/alternatives. Maintains drug knowledge and competency, staying current with pharmacy trends and practices. Initiates learning about new disease and drug therapies. Retrieves, analyzes, and communicates drug information professionally and timely. Understands pharmacotherapy of disease states. Performs daily clinical functions such as IV to PO conversions, antibiotic dosing stewardship, and renal dosing adjustments. Collects and interprets data to design, recommend, implement, monitor, and/or modify patient‑specific pharmacotherapy in collaboration with other health‑care professionals. Patient Counseling and Communication Counsels patients on drug therapy to ensure safe use and maximize outcomes. Demonstrates respect for patients and maintains a pleasant, professional attitude. Communicates findings and patient needs with the medical team. Presents education professionally to pharmacy staff. Communicates clearly, concisely, and courteously with all hospital staff. Oversee/Check/Monitor Central Pharmacy Workflow Takes responsibility for overseeing all drug preparation, dispensing, and distribution activities. Conducts in‑process and final checks on technician actions. Oversees, prioritizes, and directs daily activities of Pharmacy Technicians. Maintains a positive, teamwork‑oriented work environment. Prioritizes workloads, optimizes productivity, and maintains compliance with all regulations. Identifies and recommends solutions to improve productivity, policies, procedures, and cost‑saving measures. Project Management and Departmental Goals Develops, initiates, maintains, and completes assigned projects. Contributes actively to departmental goals. Performs clinical and/or regulatory monitoring. Provides Training, Mentoring, and Precepting of Students, Residents, and New Hires Assists in training, team teaching, mentoring, and precepting. Develops education materials for pharmacy staff. Compliance with Pharmacy Regulations References and looks up pharmacy regulations such as USP 797, USP 800, Joint Commission medication management, state laws, CMS code of participation, and hospital policies. Maintains compliance with all hospital and network policies and accurately documents regulatory requirements. Identifies patterns of non‑compliance and reports to management as needed. Follows policies and procedures, anticipates workflow, and utilizes downtime effectively. Maintains a clean, clutter‑free work area. Other Duties as Assigned Education, Skills, and Experience Computer skills and ability to multi‑task and work independently. Working Conditions Manual: Requires manual skills, motor coordination, and finger dexterity. Occupational: Some occupational risk.
